The Great Border Tony Viljoen Marathon 🏅🏃🏾

What a great day at the Border Tony Viljoen Marathon in the Eastern Cape - the home of legends.

42.44 km completed in 4:27:26, at an average pace of 6:18/km. My first full marathon after Comrades!

The season is back. No excuses!!! We keep moving and building momentum.

3 OF 3 | POTSDAM BRIDGE

Deputy Minister Sihle Zikalala concludes his oversight visit to the Potsdam Bridge in Potsdam Village, just outside Mdantsane Township in KuGompo City.

The bridge is 100% complete, marking another milestone in the delivery of critical bridge infrastructure to communities.

The Deputy Minister thanked the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) for its contribution to the construction of the Welisizwe Bridges. He also highlighted the opportunities created through the programme, with EPWP participants and departmental artisans gaining work opportunities and practical experience through their involvement in the construction of the bridges.

2 OF 3 | LUPHONDWENI BRIDGE

Deputy Minister Sihle Zikalala is conducting an oversight visit to the Luphondweni Bridge in eLuphondweni Village, which is currently 65% complete.

Construction has temporarily paused due to heavy rains, with completion anticipated by the end of October 2026.

The Deputy Minister commended the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) for continuing work despite challenging weather conditions and reassured community members that the project will remain under close oversight through to completion.

QAGA BRIDGE | SITE OVERSIGHT

Deputy Minister Sihle Zikalala is conducting an oversight visit to the Qaga Bridge in Qaga Village, KuGompo City.

The bridge is 100% complete and awaiting final verification documentation before it is officially handed over to the community.

The visit forms part of the Deputy Minister’s oversight responsibilities to monitor project delivery, address bottlenecks and ensure infrastructure reaches communities as planned.

OVERSIGHT IN ACTION | KuGompo City

Deputy Minister Sihle Zikalala is conducting an oversight visit to three Welisizwe Bridges in KuGompo City, Eastern Cape.

With 54 bridges already completed in the Eastern Cape, against a target of 51, 14 more are under construction. The focus remains on accelerating delivery, resolving bottlenecks and ensuring infrastructure projects reach communities on time.

The conference brought together Rotaract delegates from South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe, providing a platform for young leaders to engage on community service, leadership development and professional networking.

Deputy Minister Zikalala commended Rotaract for its service-focused ethos, noting that its commitment to serving communities reflects the values championed by South Africa’s founding President, Nelson Mandela.

A Message of Great Appreciation 🙏🏽

I wish to sincerely thank you all for your warm birthday wishes and messages. They are truly appreciated.

On my birthday, I also had the privilege of participating in the unveiling of the Victim-Friendly Room for survivors of Gender-Based Violence at Wentworth Police Station.

We all have a responsibility to build and protect our communities. Together, we must uproot social ills and strive for a safer and more prosperous society.

I also had the wonderful opportunity to participate in training sessions, followed by a run and aerobics with an incredible team in Durban. Thank you, Coach Sasco. Let’s continue to keep fit and healthy.

Once again, thank you to everyone for your love, prayers, and well wishes. A special thank you to my lovely wife, Nelly Zikalala, the @ukhozi_fm Breakfast Show team, as well as all my colleagues and comrades. Your support and kindness mean a great deal to me.

🚧Today, Deputy Minister @sziks handed over the Umbimbini Welisizwe Rural Bridge in the Ulundi Local Municipality, northern KwaZulu-Natal.

The bridge will provide safer and more reliable access for communities, improve connectivity and enhance service delivery.

The Deputy Minister was joined by the Deputy Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Richard Mkhungo; the Deputy Director-General for Construction Project Management, Luyanda Kafile; Regional Manager Nkosi Vilakazi; Ward Councillor for the Embizeni area, Muntu Mthethwa; and Amakhosi.

Today, we handed over the 127th completed bridge under the Welisizwe Rural Bridges Programme in Ulundi, marking the completion of 41 bridges in KwaZulu-Natal.

Infrastructure should always put people first. These bridges mean fewer children risking their lives crossing rivers to get to school, while ensuring rural communities have uninterrupted access to essential services such as clinics, hospitals and other economic opportunities.

DEPUTY MINISTER OF PUBLIC WORKS AND INFRASTRUCTURE, SIHLE ZIKALALA PRESENTS BRIDGE HANDOVER PROGRAMME TO HIS MAJESTY KING MISUZULU KAZWELITHINI

The Office of His Majesty King Misuzulu kaZwelithini confirms that Mr Sihle Zikalala is the Deputy Minister of @DepartmentPWI accompanied by his delegation, paid a courtesy visit to His Majesty at KwaKhangelamankengane Royal Palace.

The purpose of the visit was to formally present a programme for the handover of several bridges constructed through a collaborative initiative between the Department of Transport and the Department of Public Works. These infrastructure projects were initiated during the reign of the late His Majesty King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu to improve access and connectivity for rural communities and have now reached completion, making them ready for official handover.

During the engagement, the Deputy Minister briefed His Majesty on the progress of the projects and the planned handover programme. The visit also reaffirmed the strong partnership between government and the Zulu Kingdom in advancing development that directly benefits communities.

In keeping with longstanding African and Zulu custom, Deputy Minister Zikalala presented cattle to His Majesty as a gesture of respect, gratitude and goodwill. The presentation symbolised the enduring relationship between the Government and the Zulu Throne, as well as a shared commitment to serving the people.

His Majesty welcomed the completion of the bridges and expressed his appreciation for government's continued investment in rural infrastructure, noting that such projects improve safety, enhance access to essential services, and contribute meaningfully to the socio-economic development of communities across the Kingdom.
