In the lead up to the Indian Ocean Defence & Security (IODS) Conference in Perth, Western Australia the Patrol Boat Autonomy Trial #team is pleased to release a new video that highlights the success of the four-day endurance trial, completed in April 2024.
@Austal Australia, Greenroom Robotics and Trusted Autonomous Systems, together with the crew from International Maritime Services completed a series of tests on remote and autonomous operations, over an extended period of time on ‘Sentinel’, a decommissioned Armidale-class Patrol Boat, off the coast of Western Australia.
Designed to test the reliability of, and build trust in the vessel’s autonomous systems, the endurance trial included a number of collision avoidance events that demonstrated the capabilities of the platform and navigation programs that may help deliver optionally crewed vessels for the Royal @Australian_Navy in the future.
To learn more, or meet some of the PBAT team, visit the Austal stand (A-10) at IODS 2024 from 24 – 26 July 2024.

@austal post on the sea acceptance- and endurance-trials of PBAT Sentinel. 👇
TAS impressed and proud of the achievements of the project.
BZ to Austal and the project partners! Thanks to RAN for the continued support!
As part of the Patrol Boat Autonomy Trial underway for the Royal @Australian_Navy, @Austal Australia completed Sea Acceptance Trials (SAT’s) of the vessel Sentinel, off the coast of Western Australia in March and April 2024.
With the support of @tasdcrc, Greenroom Robotics and Navy’s Warfare Innovation (WIN) Branch, the trials included a series of supervised tests of the Sentinel’s remote control and autonomous systems and operating capability, from onboard and remote (command centre) locations.
Utilising collaboration partner Greenroom Robotics’ Advanced Maritime Autonomy (GAMA) software, the vessel undertook multiple, remote controlled and autonomous (pre-programmed) navigation events, including various manoeuvres, station keeping, go/no-go operation testing, advanced collision avoidance, contact detection and radar tuning and vessel dynamics testing.
With the vessel safely and successfully completing all of the objectives of the Sea Acceptance Trials, the PBAT team progressed to the next stage of the project; an endurance trial that tested the remote and autonomous capability of the vessel and systems in an extended voyage journey over several days.
