During the Sino-Indian War of 1962, Subedar Joginder Singh was the commander of a platoon of the Sikh Regiment holding a defensive position on a ridge near Tongpen La in NEFA. At 05:30 hours on 23rd October 1962, the enemy launched a heavy attack along the Bum La axis to break through to Towang.

The leading battalion of the enemy attacked the ridge in three waves, each comprising about 200 soldiers. Subedar Joginder Singh and his men mowed down the first wave, temporarily halting the enemy’s advance due to the heavy losses it suffered. Within a few minutes, a second wave followed and was dealt with similarly. However, by then, the platoon had lost half its men. Although wounded in the thigh, he refused to be evacuated.

Under his inspiring leadership, the platoon stubbornly held its ground and refused to withdraw. Meanwhile, the position came under attack for the third time. He personally manned a light machine gun and shot down several enemy soldiers.

The enemy troops, however, continued to advance despite suffering heavy losses. When the situation became untenable, he and the few men remaining at the position fixed bayonets and charged the advancing enemy, bayoneting several soldiers before he and his comrades were overpowered.

He was posthumously awarded the country’s highest gallantry award, Param Vir Chakra, for displaying inspiring leadership, devotion to duty and bravery of the highest order,
