44 years ago today, on 16 July 1982, AIDS and infected blood products were firmly on the radar.
The Infected Blood Inquiry report records: “Then, in the MMWR of 16 July 1982, the CDC reported three cases which had been confirmed in people with haemophilia who had developed AIDS.”
It also records that an internal DHSS memo that day “alerted the Medicines Division to possible adverse publicity about the risks of US Factor 8 concentrates”.
