🌿 World Mangrove Day 2026

On International Mangrove Conservation Day, Thiru. K. J. Praveen Kumar, I.A.S., District Collector, Nagapattinam, led a mangrove plantation drive at Sembodai Village with Thiru. D. Rameshwaran, I.F.S., Wildlife Warden, Nagapattinam Wildlife Division. Alongwith 180 volunteers and 50 departmental staff participated, took the Mangrove Conservation Oath, and planted saplings using the Fishbone Structure Mangrove Plantation Method. The programme strengthened public awareness and community participation in protecting mangroves—our Ecological Infrastructure that safeguards coasts, biodiversity, livelihoods, and climate resilience.

At Pichavaram in Cuddalore, the village canal now has clear water flowing freely. What was once a plastic- and garbage-choked canal has been transformed, with the natural flow to the Pichavaram back waters restored.

The initiative was led by Director of Environment Thiru Rahul Nadh and Cuddalore District Collector Thiru Sibi Adithya, with field leadership from CF Thiru Periasamy, DFO Thiru Gurusamy, and Ranger Thiru Iqbal, supported by their committed team.

Tamil Nadu is strengthening conservation of the endangered #SlenderLoris, a small nocturnal primate vital to forest ecosystems.

The Slender Loris Conservation Centre at Kadavur supports long-term conservation of this unique species and its dry forest habitat.

Prepared under the Green Tamil Nadu Mission with Nizhal Trust, IWST & IFGTB, the report also uses advanced Electrical Resistance Tomography (ERT) to assess tree health and guide conservation of these living urban legacies.

Chennai’s remarkable natural heritage comes into focus with the release of “Hundred Year Old Trees of Chennai – A Living Legacy” by Hon’ble Chief Minister Thiru @mkstalin.

The report documents 57 heritage trees across 27 species, some standing for more than 200 years.

The study finds 24 trees over 200 years old and 33 between 100–200 years.

The oldest identified tree — a Baobab (Adansonia digitata) — is estimated to be 239–292 years old, predating Chennai’s transformation into a major metropolis.
