This past week, Local 100 hosted veterans from TWU locals across the country for their third quarter meeting.

Brothers and sisters from Local 555, representing Ramp, Operations, Provisioning, and Freight Agents at Southwest Airlines, Local 252, with workers from Nassau and Suffolk, Local 591, with its headquarters in Texas and Local 250-A, based in San Francisco, joined members from other locals and Local 100, who showed them around New York.

The vets had a dinner with President John Chiarello at the world famous Junior’s, visited the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, and saw other sights around town between holding meetings.

Thanks to our Veterans Services Department, who organized the four-day meeting.

#FlashbackFriday to when we urged the MTA to build the 2nd avenue subway before tearing down the IRT 3rd Avenue elevated that operated in Manhattan and the Bronx.

The 3rd Avenue “El” was opened in 1878 and was the last elevated train to hold service in Manhattan. Due to pressure from those with real estate interest the “El” began to close in sections with Manhattan service phased out by 1955 and the Bronx by 1973 with the Bx41 and Bx55 taking over parts of its route.

As for the 2nd Avenue subway, on January 1, 2017 the first phase of the project was completed with three new lines. The full line is said to be completed by September 2032, almost 60 years after the closure of the 3rd Avenue El. #WeMoveNY #UnionStrong #UnionSolidarity #WhenWeFightWeWin

President John Chiarello, Sec. Treasurer Carlos Bernabel, Administrative VP Alexander Kemp and several Local 100 members were at Maestro’s in the Bronx to help kick off the American Cancer Society’s annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer series of walks and fundraisers.

Bronx Council Members Kevin C. Riley and Shirley Aldebol were also at the event, which Local 100 is a proud sponsor of.

Each fall, officers and members from Local 100 take part in the Making Strides walk—we attended last year’s in Co-op City.

President John V. Chiarello joined TA Surface VP Gary Rosario, Division Chair Andre Armstrong, depot officers, and members today at the Health & Wellness Fair at Fresh Pond Depot.

The fair brings health and wellness resources directly to our members on the job, with vendors offering information and support on nutrition, fitness, healthy living, and other ways to improve overall well-being.

In this week’s New Hire’s class we welcome over 100 new members from RTO, Stations and Maintenance of Way.

Stations Vice President Robert Kelley, officers from M.O.W (LES Division Chair Chris Canty and 2nd Vice Chair Frank Plumey) and officers from RTO (Conductors/Towers Chair Chris Drummond and B Division Vice Chair Aaron Morrison) tell new members to use the Union as a shield against management and as a resource for practical tips to succeed during the probationary period.

We are back to the bargaining table for the first time in over a month after refusing to accept the MTA’s unacceptable offer.

President John Chiarello met with department VPs and Chairs this morning to encourage them to renew their departmental negotiations to keep pace with the main table.

Also on the agenda was the upcoming CLC Labor Day March and Rally on September 8—a perfect opportunity for Local 100 to remind everyone that the fight continues for the fair and equitable contract we deserve.

Secretary Treasurer Carlos Bernabel joined about 200 members from RTO today in Cunningham Park in Queens for the 3rd annual Subdivision C BBQ and softball game.

The MTA has been lying about bus safety and falsified bus maintenance records for years.

From the Daily News:

“The MTA spokesman did tell WABC in June that the union’s complaints were “bogus” and “just in time for labor negotiations.”

While it is true that TWU Local 100 is currently in contract talks, the data obtained by the Daily News shows that the depot with the greatest number of questionable work orders in the first six months of this year is the Yukon Depot on Staten Island — where workers are represented by a local of the Amalgamated Transit Union, not the TWU.”

Today was our annual M3 Scholarship luncheon, where children, grandchildren, spouses of members and members themselves receive the scholarships awarded to them in a drawing earlier in the summer.

This year’s 61 scholarship winners are attending a wide variety of schools, some close to home, like LIU Post and FIT and in other cases headed out of town to Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh, Howard in Washington D.C. and Northeastern in Boston.

Wherever they are headed, we wish all our scholarship winners lots of luck.

President John Chiarello met this morning with Detectives’ Endowment Association President Scott Munro to join the New York Public Safety Alliance, an organization of dozens of law enforcement unions from Buffalo to Suffolk.

In addition to the police, corrections, and court employees unions, TWU Local 100 has a huge interest in the issue of public safety—our members are on the frontlines every day dealing with the public and often suffering the consequences of violent crimes.

We look forward to working with the alliance to address public safety matters at the city, state and national level.
