A snow plow train leaving Mclean, Texas in 1912. The plow is a wedge plow. They run along at a pretty good clip, blasting through lesser drifts. If they get stopped by anything deep, they back up and take another run at it. Every once in a while they get stuck. The second train stopped behind the plow has what appear to be two cabooses, a place to eat and catch a nap. This would also be the worst-case back up if the plow got completely stuck. The caboose train could be run backwards to civilization. Pretty interesting photo, I think.

“Did you know that #Texas is home to the largest freight rail network in the United States? Over 50 railroads operate on over 10,300 miles of track stretching from Texarkana to Terrell County.”
DYK that the weight ratio of an average freight train to that of an automobile is about 4000:1? That’s equivalent to your car hitting a soda can.

The westbound Penn Texas route ended that month, and eastbound trips made their final run on September 30, 1970.
Still, @Amtrak maintains some of the Texas Eagle route connecting Texans to Chicago and following much of the old Penn Texas route.
7/ With the rise of airlines, ridership declined in the 1960s, and sleeper service beyond St. Louis ended on in 1961. Despite changes, the Penn Texas continued to run, even after the Pennsylvania Railroad merged with the New York Central Railroad to form Penn Central in 1968.
