Student loan fund faces 7-billion-baht shortfall

The Student Loan Fund is running a shortfall of more than 7 billion baht, raising concerns that students may not receive tuition support, People’s Party list MP Rukchanok Srinok said in parliament on Thursday.

Rukchanok said some universities had threatened to prevent students from continuing their studies because the fund had not transferred tuition payments. She urged the government to guarantee loans for eligible students and criticised the budget scrutiny committee for failing to allocate any of its 11 billion baht in budget cuts to the fund.

PM’s Office Minister Paradorn Prissananantakul said he would ask Higher Education Minister Yodchanan Wongsawat to ensure universities did not bar affected students from taking examinations.

Paradorn said only one million of the 3.6 million borrowers required to make repayments were doing so, while 2.6 million were in default. The fund collects about 27–28 billion baht annually, but recovering payments from borrowers who have sufficient income could raise that amount to 40–50 billion baht, he said.

Opposition Says US Sanctions Push Exposes Thailand’s Failure on Scam Networks

Thailand’s slow investigations into alleged scam networks have forced US lawmakers to consider action against 28 individuals and organisations, Democrat Party deputy leader Korn Chatikavanij said on Thursday. He warned that the move could make Thai authorities appear ineffective and unable to enforce their own laws.

Korn said the US lawmakers had asked the State and Treasury departments to investigate the 28 parties for possible sanctions under the Global Magnitsky Act. He stressed that being named did not prove wrongdoing but said US authorities were likely to pursue the case because scam operations in Southeast Asia had harmed large numbers of Americans.

The list includes Vorapak Tanyawong, a former deputy finance minister in Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul’s previous cabinet. Korn questioned whether the Securities and Exchange Commission had ever asked Vorapak to explain his alleged links, saying its slow response had fuelled suspicions of political protection.

Korn said a Thai House committee had sent the SEC 20 questions but received a direct answer to only one, while 10 went unanswered. He said US authorities had set a 180-day timeline, while Thai agencies could not say when their inquiries would be completed.

US lawmakers seek sanctions review of former Thai minister

US lawmakers have asked the State and Treasury departments to investigate former Thai deputy finance minister Vorapak Tanyawong and 25 others over alleged links to Southeast Asian scam and money-laundering networks.

Vorapak resigned in October 2025 after Whale Hunting alleged that he helped Benjamin Mauerberger’s network enter Thailand’s financial sector and that his wife received US$2.9 million in cryptocurrency. He denied wrongdoing and sued the publication’s journalist, Tom Wright, for defamation.

Others named include Mauerberger, the alleged network organiser; Cambodian businessman Yim Leak, its alleged political and financial facilitator; Singapore fund manager Eugene Tang, who allegedly helped move its money; Deng Pibing, the Chinese owner of the sanctioned Zhengheng Group; and Hun To, a relative of Cambodia’s ruling family and director of Huione Pay, whose parent company has been accused by US authorities of laundering billions of dollars in illicit proceeds.

Congressmen Brian Mast and John Moolenaar asked US authorities to determine within 180 days whether those named qualify for sanctions. The request does not establish guilt.

Coalition MP Warns EC Against Outside Interference

The Election Commission must resist outside interference and remember that it is accountable to taxpayers, coalition Pheu Thai list MP Sutin Klungsang told parliament on Wednesday.

Speaking during a debate on the EC’s 2024 and 2025 performance reports, Sutin compared the commission to a sieve responsible for allowing good candidates into politics while keeping unsuitable people out. A defective or distorted sieve would damage the country, he said.

He warned that poorly managed elections could create conflict instead of providing a peaceful solution. The EC’s September 14 decision in the Senate collusion case had divided public opinion and risked triggering another political crisis, he added.

Sutin said he did not know whether the EC had faced political interference but urged it to take public concerns seriously. Its funding came from taxpayers, meaning its primary obligation was to the public rather than any political group, he said.

PM Sues iLaw Director, Not Source of Senate Collusion Claims

Prime Minister and Bhumjaithai leader Anutin Charnvirakul filed a criminal defamation lawsuit against iLaw director Yingcheep Atchanont on Tuesday over comments linking him to alleged collusion in the 2024 Senate election.

Yingcheep’s comments were based largely on testimony from former Bhumjaithai MP Ekkarat Changlao, who alleged that party figures planned the operation and that Anutin and Bhumjaithai co-founder Newin Chidchob met elected senators at Bangkok’s Pullman King Power hotel. Ekkarat later withdrew his entire account.

Election Commission chairman Narong Klanwarin nevertheless confirmed that Anutin and Newin met the senators at the hotel. He said the allegations against Bhumjaithai figures were dropped because the file did not establish any illegal activity, Ekkarat was considered unreliable and investigators found no corroborating financial or physical evidence.

No lawsuit against Ekkarat has been reported, and Anutin’s lawyer did not explain why the original source of the allegations was not sued. The court scheduled a preliminary hearing in Yingcheep’s case for December 14, while the lawyer denied that the case was intended to silence criticism and said any further lawsuits would depend on Anutin.

Bhumjaithai-linked figures remain in Senate collusion case despite party leaders being spared

The Election Commission declined to refer 21 Bhumjaithai politicians and associates, including ministers, party executives and co-founder Newin Chidchob, to the Supreme Court over alleged collusion in the 2024 Senate selection. However, several of the 15 people classified as “other persons” who face proceedings have ties to the party, its politicians or accused senators.

Those with identified connections include:

- Somkiat Liangprasit — father of Deputy Interior Minister Worasit Liangprasit.
- Somjate Limpabandhu — Bhumjaithai MP for Sukhothai.
- Wongsakorn Chanakit — former Bhumjaithai parliamentary candidate.
- Subin Sakda — assistant to Bhumjaithai MP Phichai Chomphuphon.
- Supachai Phosu — former Bhumjaithai MP and deputy House speaker.
- Parinya Thorasena — identified in the original inquiry as acting with Supachai.
- Athiwat Montri — nephew of Senator Prateung Montri, whose sister Natee Ratchakitprakarn is the wife of Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn.
- Phannipha Phasuk — reportedly the wife of accused Senator Sorachat Wish Suwanprom and a member of his team.
- Nisita Manchai — Bhumjaithai Party employee in Surat Thani.

The connections show that although the EC cleared Bhumjaithai’s senior leadership, it referred several relatives, party employees, aides, former candidates and provincial operatives from the same broader network.

Nattawut Claims Press-Witnessed Altercation Was AI-Generated and Edited

Nattawut Wongniam claimed footage of his confrontation with former election commissioner Somchai Srisutthiyakorn was AI-generated and edited to appear violent, even though the incident occurred directly in front of reporters waiting to interview Somchai outside Thong Lor Police Station. Nattawut denied assaulting Somchai, claiming he reacted after being tickled when Somchai’s bicycle handlebar struck his waist.

Somchai filed complaints accusing Nattawut of assault, property damage and insulting him. Nattawut responded on September 7 by asking the national police chief to seek arrest warrants for Somchai, iLaw director Yingcheep Atchanont and four others over a legal fundraiser. Nattawut, who donated 2,000 baht to the campaign himself, accused them of public fraud and money laundering but refused to explain why he transferred the money.

Nattawut was dismissed as a prosecutor in 2018 over disciplinary findings that he solicited 1.5 million baht to influence an election case and falsified documents linked to a drug case. The Supreme Administrative Court upheld his dismissal in 2022, and the Lawyers Council later removed him from its register after finding that he had not disclosed the dismissal when applying for a lifetime licence.

Nattawut was appointed an adviser to Natural Resources and Environment Minister and Bhumjaithai MP Suchart Chomklin in 2025 and later handled legal cases for him. Suchart distanced himself after the altercation, saying Nattawut was only an outside contractor and no longer worked for him.
