FEDERAL FIREPOWER: Sen. Mike Lee wants gun owners to have more freedom. He's now working to eliminate of concealed carry permits in favor of constitutional carry.

"The Founders established a national right to keep and bear arms, not to ask for permission from hostile local officials or risk imprisonment for crossing the wrong state line," Lee says.

But his bill wouldn't be absolute. Private properties and secure government buildings could still prohibit guns, and people who are not legally allowed to own a firearm would remain barred from carrying one.

The National Association for Gun Rights lauded the bill as "the only legislation that will restore the right of all law-abiding Americans to carry a firearm in every state without having to beg for government permission."

The city of Hoover, Alabama, has officially rejected a proposal to build an Islamic school and community center after large public protests and a heavy turnout at the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission meeting.

The commission justified its decision with concerns about traffic congestion, high population density and impact on property values.
