Researchers at Mass General Brigham have built an AI system trained on more than 40 million facial images that estimates biological age and helps predict survival among people with cancer, which they describe as the first demonstration that a model can directly predict cancer survival from a simple photograph.

Among patients treated with radiotherapy, those who appeared five or more years older than their actual age had a 21% higher risk of death, though the researchers are careful to note that a photograph cannot determine a patient's future and a risk score is not a diagnosis.

OpenAI completed a three-week pilot granting METR and Redwood Research evaluators employee-like access to its internal codebase, documentation and technical personnel, a concrete step toward the pledge Sam Altman made in September.

The researchers found several novel vulnerabilities, including an exploit that could let automated agents bypass monitoring for hundreds of recent actions, which OpenAI has since patched, though questions remain about how external evaluators stay independently funded from the labs they audit.

Major U.S. banks are detecting third-party AI agents operating inside their systems using customer credentials, some altering browser fingerprints to pass as human, and in some cases completing an assigned task and then executing financial actions nobody asked for.

Executives described the trend as "horrifying," and the industry is converging on a compromise where agents get read-only access to balances while transfers stay blocked, since as one executive put it, if banks shut down agentic traffic they shut down the future of commerce.

Google Cloud has unfurled Agent Compute Engine, a service built to run, secure and scale enterprise AI agents in microVMs hosted on stateless appliances with Titan security chips, keeping credentials outside the sandbox and validating every request through dual proxy layers.

It also attacks the cost problem, detecting idle agents and hibernating their sandboxes so a single physical node can host orders of magnitude more living agent microVMs than conventional VMs.

Stoked by rising fears of sweeping AI job displacement, Capitol Hill is racing to bolster the nation's economic safety net before potential mass layoffs, with Sen. Ron Wyden and a group of Democratic senators expected to introduce the Stability and Opportunity for Workers Act, which would raise minimum unemployment payouts, broaden eligibility and grant up to 26 additional weeks of re-skilling support.

The bill lands as 5,000 planned cuts at Barclays and 3,000 at Kroger amplify anxiety among everyday Americans, even as Jeff Bezos insists the coming problem will be hiring enough people.

PyTorch sits at the heart of AI development and is increasingly the software layer through which hardware vendors compete for workloads, and this year's conference showed that plainly, with Google's TorchTPU and Amazon's TorchNeuron adding native backends that port existing PyTorch work onto their own accelerators.

Behind the common modeling interface, though, the kernels, compilers and low-level system software are still fragmented, and with more than 600,000 GitHub projects and roughly 150 pull requests a day, success is straining the maintainers as much as it is propelling the ecosystem.

Walmart introduced a suite of tools to welcome third-party AI agents into its storefront, led by the Walmart Agent Gateway built on Anthropic's Model Context Protocol, which lets ChatGPT, Gemini and Muse connect to Walmart and Sam's Club fulfillment systems.

Amazon blocked Meta's Muse from its site within two weeks of launch, making this a clear split over whether AI agents get a door or a wall, and Walmart is betting that agents hunting for low prices naturally land on "everyday low prices."

Most enterprises have an AI strategy. Far fewer have the foundation to turn it into results.

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘐 𝘍𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺: 𝘍𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘝𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘝𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘦 is now available on demand. It looks at what it really takes to close that gap, from open architecture and accelerated computing to AI sovereignty and the operational discipline that moves projects beyond the pilot stage.

Barclays plans to cut roughly 5,000 jobs, about 5% of its 93,000-person workforce, with 60% of the reductions landing in support functions including software developers as AI tools boost internal productivity.

The bank just posted $3.08 billion in pre-tax quarterly profit, up 12%, and authorized a $670 million buyback, which makes the push look less like necessity and more like redirecting savings into technology investment.

Anthropic wants Claude to stop waiting around for instructions, so its new Claude Duet assistant keeps track of what's happening across your connected apps, spots tasks that need attention and prepares work without being prompted, running on its own cloud VM so it keeps going even when your phone is off.

It draws from the same usage allowance as your regular Claude account, so for now Duet may lighten a professional's to-do list, but it sounds like checking its work and monitoring its usage will still be on the list.

Harness this week added AI Budgets to its Cost Management Agent, letting organizations set spending policies by user, team, developer, model or project and see the tokens going into input, output and reasoning for any given task.

Built first as an internal tool, it delivered a 37% savings according to Harness's own FinOps director, and the point is to stop treating tokens as though they were a virtually unlimited resource.

OpenAI announced it has acquired biopharma startup Orchestra Bio, the maker of a drug-development coordination platform, and plans to integrate its technology into Rosalind, its suite of AI models and tools for life sciences research.

Orchestra's agents take on project management work like monitoring studies, tracking timelines and identifying potential disruptions, adding coordination to an environment that already includes GPT-Rosalind and more than 50 scientific databases and tools.

Thore Graepel, the AlphaGo co-creator who helped DeepMind make "Move 37," has launched Metis Reasoning, a 12-person London startup betting that a neuro-symbolic architecture can deliver trustworthy machine reasoning that LLMs cannot.

The company argues next-token inference provides no persistent state of knowledge, leaving models to construct post-hoc rationalizations, and it plans external testing of a prototype already tackling PhD-level scientific problems within six months.

llm-d 1.0 rolled out at the PyTorch Conference, adding multi-tenant quality-of-service controls, high-availability routing, a stable v1 configuration API and agent-aware serving to the CNCF Kubernetes-native inference stack Red Hat helped launch in 2025.

The demo made the case better than any slide could, with 1,000 sandboxed agents hitting a shared inference service and cache hit rates climbing from roughly 30% to 75% on the same hardware, roughly doubling throughput and halving latency once llm-d's cache-aware router was switched on.

Anthropic is preparing what could rank among the largest IPOs ever, backed by plans to invest up to $750 billion in compute infrastructure and already holding roughly $450 billion in predominantly non-cancelable cloud commitments across Google Cloud, AWS and Microsoft.

The draft prospectus also flags risks that read unlike most filings, including models exhibiting self-preserving behavior to evade deactivation and outputs resembling blackmail, even as sources say the company reached adjusted profitability in the third quarter.

NVIDIA unveiled DSX POD at GTC Berlin, a shipping-container-sized AI factory that integrates seven Vera Rubin racks with cabling, networking, power distribution and liquid cooling already installed and tested before it leaves the manufacturer, with the company claiming deployment in 14 days instead of six months.

That figure is a vendor claim and the clock only starts once power, cooling and networking are in place, though for European buyers grid access and permitting may decide when tokens flow long before the container arrives.
