Né au début du 18e siècle du contact entre les colonisateurs français et les Africains réduits en esclavage, le Kouri-Vini est une langue indigène à la Louisiane, aux États-Unis.

Entre 1791 et le début des années 1800, des milliers de réfugiés de Saint-Domingue (Haïti) vinrent enrichir cette culture créole déjà bien enracinée.

Aujourd'hui, entre 3 000 et 10 000 locuteurs le parlent encore, dans toutes ses variantes. Militants et artistes se battent pour sa survie.
