Following a thorough inspection of LaGuardia’s airfield pavement using ground-penetrating radar, areas of concern were identified and proactively repaired. Those repairs are now complete, and Runway 4/22 has been reopened. Our investigation into the cause of the sinkhole is ongoing.
While LGA remained open to flight operations during the closure of the runway, reduced capacity affected flight operations. Travelers should expect residual delays and are encouraged to check their flight status with their airline.
During investigatory inspections of LaGuardia’s airfield pavement Thursday using ground-penetrating radar, possible areas of concern were identified and proactively repaired. Out of an abundance of caution, engineering crews are conducting additional inspections that necessitate the continued closure of Runway 4/22. Crews expect to complete those surveys and any associated repairs by 6 a.m. on Saturday, at which time the runway is expected to reopen.
LGA remains open to flight operations, though flights may be affected due to the runway closure. Travelers should check with their airline for flight status before arriving at the airport.
LGA Terminal B invites you to honor and remember our nation's heroes this Memorial Day. Catch the commemorative water feature show at the Food Hall on Level 4 throughout the holiday weekend. ⭐
Plan ahead and arrive early if you're traveling through LaGuardia Airport today! It's going to be busy.

At approximately 11 a.m., the Port Authority was conducting its daily morning inspection of LaGuardia’s airfield when crews identified a sinkhole near Runway 4/22. The runway was immediately shut down, and emergency construction and engineering crews are onsite to determine the cause and complete necessary repairs as quickly and safely as possible.
The Port Authority is in close communication with airlines and airport partners and will continue providing updates as conditions evolve. Travelers should expect delays and cancellations, particularly with forecast thunderstorms expected later today, and are strongly encouraged to check directly with their airlines for the latest flight status information.
