The Supreme Court protects satire and parody under the First Amendment, even if "patently offensive," provided it cannot reasonably be understood as stating actual facts. The landmark case Hustler Magazine, Inc. v. Falwell (1988) established that public figures cannot sue for emotional distress over parody without proving "actual malice".
