As anticipation builds for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, opening worldwide on July 17, the film has already sparked international discussion over casting, historical and archaeological accuracy, language, cultural representation, identity, and the limited participation of Hellenic actors and scholars.
Using the forthcoming film as a timely point of departure, not as a critique or endorsement, we will explore the enduring significance of Homer’s Odyssey: its historical and archaeological foundations, literary brilliance, timeless themes, and extraordinary influence on world civilization nearly three millennia after it was composed.
I will be moderating the discussion and our distinguished panel includes:
• Dr. Joel P. Christensen – Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, City University of New York Graduate Center, and internationally recognized Homeric scholar.
• Dr. Suzanne Lye – Associate Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies, Department of Classics, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
• Professor Nicholas Alexiou – Sociologist, author, poet, and Director of the Hellenic American Project, Queens College.
