The Tower of Skulls of Dhusar Bhargava Brahmins

The battle between Maharaja Hemchandra Vikramaditya (Hemu) and the Mughals was fought at Panipat on November 5, 1556 AD. At first Hemu was successful on both wings. Probably he would have been the victor but for the accident that he was hit in the eye by an arrow and rendered unconscious. His army, when deprived of its leader, dispersed at once.

Hemu was captured in an unconscious, almost dead state. He was killed by Bairam Khan, but the sword was given to a young Akbar to touch his neck so that he could earn the title of Ghazi (the killer of Hindus (infidels) and who enslaves zar (cattle/livelyhood), zoru (women), zameen (land). Hemu’s head was sent to Kabul to show Afghans that he was dead, and his trunk was gibbeted at one of the gates of Delhi.

But the tragedy did not end there. The forces of Akbar conquered the Sarkar of Alwar, which was the home of Hemu. The Mughal officer proceeded to the township where Hemu’s family lived - Machheri near Rajgarh in Alwar District.

The father of Hemu, Puran Das, a purohit who had taken
sanyas, had migrated to Vrindavan to live with the famous saint Harivansh of the Vallabha Sampraday. He was captured and brought alive before Pir Mohammad Khan, a general and military commander of Akbar.

He told him to change his religion. The old man answered, “For eighty years I have worshipped my god Vishnu, according to Sanatan Dharma. Why should I change it at this time, and why should I merely for fear of my life and without understanding how it comes into your way of worship?

Pir Mohammad treated his words as if he had not heard them, and like a slithering snake, replied to Puran in the language of the sword.

The vengeance of the Mughals continued. The clan of Dhusar Bhargavas was hounded throughout the region, brutally beheaded. A pyramid of their skulls was built.

This painting from Akbar’s time is on display in the National Archives, New Delhi, and its replica can be seen in the War Museum at Panipat. Such pyramids were still in existence even 60 years later during the time of Jahangir, as mentioned by Peter Mundy, a British traveller in his travelogue on India during that period.

No praise can be too great for Hemu’s bold endeavour to re-establish indigenous rule at Delhi after more than 350 years of foreign domination. However, his whole clan, supporters, and everyone he knew were put to death.

R.C.Majumdar mentions, “such was the end of the noble family of Hemu, a great Hindu who was born in a humble home, but made his way to the throne of Delhi.”

Hemu fought 22 battles against Afghans who had revolted against Adil Shah, as he was his Prime Minister and Chief of the Afghan Army.

The next time, someone bitches about Brahmins, feel free to share this story so they know what sacrifices they made so India would be free. This is one of the reasons there are so few Brahmins and Kshatriyas in India today, because countless of them died fighting, and their families and clans were brutally murdered. Shove this in the face of thankless idiots who claim 3000 years of thirst and the slimy creatures who call Mughals 'great'.

This Ganesh Chaturthi, I found myself looking in awe at this incredibly unique and exquisite 13th c. Panchamukhi Gaṇeśa in the British Museum. The museum says the Murti was made in Odisha and was “possibly” from Konark. Indian scholars have also identified the origin as Konark.

The Konark Gaṇeśa is more than a meter high with five heads (pañcamukha) and ten hands, holding on the right side, a discus (chakra), trident (triśūla), bow (dhanur), club (gaḍā) and fruit (jambhīra). On his left side are, a lotus (padma), noose (pāśa) whisk (chāmara) and tusk (danta). He wears a sacred thread consisting of a snake (sarpayajñopavīta). In his trunk Gaṇeśa holds an upturned water-pot, while on his knee, devi Lakṣmī grasps a lotus stalk bearing a large bloom. Beneath the throne are devotees, and an elephant and a rat, the respective vehicles (vāhana) of Lakṣmī and Gaṇeśa.

In the early 19th century, he was snatched away by British Major-General Charles Stuart of the East India Company, the famous “Hindoo Stuart" who was supposedly famous for being a strong supporter of Hindus - to be made a part of Stuart's personal "collection".

How did Stuart acquire him? Obviously the museum
doesn't day a word on the crime.

How did such a divine, sacred, monumental Gaṇeśa from such an important temple as Konark become part of the private collection of an East India Company general so easily? How do we know how many more of our deities were stolen and shipped away to private collections that later ended up in British museums?

What is horrifying is that Stuart’s other crimes in usurping sacred Hindu artifacts in Odisha are also documented. He removed ancient inscription slabs from temples at Bhubaneswar. When some were returned in the 1830s, local pandits produced a list of others that had been carried away and asked for those to be returned too. Stuart had acquired the reputation of an “idol-stealer.” He literally stole more than a hundred Hindu artifacts from temples and surroundings.

In 1830 Gaṇeśa was auctioned off at Christie’s. By 1872, he was taken to the British Museum. And there our grand Konark Gaṇeśa remains to this day.

Nearly two centuries later, the question is not how he got there. The real question is why hasn't Indian govt. done everything in its power to bring Gaṇeśa back?
