Things get confused with the next dram in our Worldwide Whiskies tasting set with a single cask rye… made in Denmark… aged in a Maple Syrup cask... from Vermont!
Grassy, apple-forward and spicy, almost menthol notes hint at rye qualities, while raisins and currants become more prominent on the palate. The finish is warming with fresh ginger in with a grounding earthiness.
Caramel and vanilla forward notes fade to a complex spice and smoky body. The rye spice in the body carries into a long finish.

For our next dram in this month’s tasting set, we head to America, with a cask strength rye. The high-rye mash bill of 95% rye and 5% malted barley combines with a maturation of 7 years in new American white oak to deliver liquid that is everything a rye whiskey ought to be.
This month’s travels get somewhat muddled up here, as we enjoy an Australian dram from Fleurieu Distillery named after an English musician's song about being in New York. No Sting here though, just a divine mix of port and sherry cask whisky that is wonderfully pudding-y.
Nose: Golden syrup, earthy, with poached peaches and dried apricots, malted barley and honey sweetness.
Palate: Honey on toast, brown sugar, dried fruit spice, candied orange peel.
Finish: Long, glace ginger, quince paste, followed by roasted chestnuts, luscious and lingering.
Slyrs was founded in 2007 in Bavaria and is an award-winning distillery. This whisky was finished in tawny port casks and is fresh & summery.
Nose: Spicy, fruity with red berries, caramel and vanilla.
Palate: Multi-layered.
Finish: Complex, harmonious.

In October, we’re jet-setting around the world. With two ryes from the US and Denmark, a pair of single malts from Germany and Sweden, and two single malt Aussie delights, this is a world whisky tour the likes of which you won’t have experienced before.

Nose: Shortbread cookie dough with a crisscross lacing of vanilla icing.
Palate: A rum-like hit to the tongue rolls into a spicy candied ginger and nutmeg combination. Truly complex.
Finish: Some pepper notes on the finish join the spicy ginger.

With a storied history dating back to 1868, the present-day incarnation of A.D. Rattray is as a top-notch indie bottler. Our first of their drams is the youngest at a whipper-snapping 21 years, and is an unreleased cask sample of Speysider Glen Elgin.
Nose: Pear blossoms, cotton candy and a touch of marzipan.
Palate: Poached pear dusted with just a hint of chili and vanilla bean.
Finish: Delicate-but-lingering persistent ripe pear and vanilla.

Upon buying this cask, Samaroli re-racked the spirit into new American Oak. We'd venture the cask wasn't heavily charred or toasted (like, for example, with Bourbon matured in virgin oak casks), as the fruity, herbal delicacy of the original spirit really shines through.
Italian legend Silvano Samaroli was the first independent bottler of Scotch outside of Britain. Advocating for cask strength and single cask, single malt whiskies at a time when blends were considered the peak of Scotch, his legacy cannot be overstated.
Nose: Medicinal herbs, vanilla and leather base notes mingle with liquorice in a perfect corollary.
Palate: Excellent persistence on the palate, where the typical salty notes of Islay prevail.
Finish: Lingers very long despite its youthful age, which quivers in the glass.
