The Carney visit to Beijing is a loud signal that the US is about to relearn a basic truth it has enjoyed for decades: allies were not just nice to have, they were the force multiplier that made American power feel effortless.

When Canada, one of America’s closest partners, openly frames its China outreach as trade diversification away from the US because of tariff pressure. Beijing calling the trip a “turning point” is exactly what happens when the US starts treating partners like vassals. Others start shopping for options.

And here’s the part Washington tends to underestimate: the US benefits from a global network built on trust, predictability, and allied buy in. Undermine that, and the cost of American power spikes fast. Supply chains get rewired, defense cooperation gets colder, intelligence sharing gets narrower, basing becomes political, and the US ends up spending more to get less.

Trump style pressure politics may win headlines, but it trains partners to reduce dependence. Canada’s Beijing trip is not the cause of that shift. It is the new reality pax America.
