Continuing Charlie Sifford's legacy. Since playing under the Charlie Sifford Memorial Exemption, these recipients have carried his legacy forward through their exceptional play.
On what would have been his 104th birthday, we celebrate the icon that was Charlie Sifford. As the first African American golfer on the PGA TOUR, Charlie paved the way for other non-white golfers to compete on TOUR.
Awarded since 2009, the Charlie Sifford Memorial Exemption has represented the advancement of diversity in the game of golf. The exemption is awarded to a deserving golfer from a minority background to compete in The Genesis Invitational. The exemption continues Siffordβs legacy by recognizing players whose journeys reflect the power of opportunity, perseverance, and progress in the game of golf.
The Genesis Invitational has long been connected to golfβs biggest stages, having held the tournament at many major championship venues over its 100 year history.Β
One of those venues, The Riviera Country Club, welcomed the PGA Championship in 1983 and 1995, bringing together generations of the gameβs greatest champions and unforgettable performances. Take a look through the photos from 1983 and 1995 π§΅
Not their first time teaming up. After playing together in the 2022 Genesis Invitational Collegiate Showcase, they reunited this weekend to win the Zurich Classic and earn Alex Fitzpatrick his PGA TOUR card.
