We'll be honest, not many of us knew what Solarpunk was before we created this project! But now, we're so glad we do and so proud we get to be referenced as part of a movement the world could really do with!
If you Google 'Solarpunk' the first images you'll find are from Dear Alice. To have our art associated with a such a powerful message, even all these years later, makes us pretty damn proud.
From a design perspective, Solarpunk is super interesting. The movement's hybrid approach to nature, technology, community finds harmony between society and nature. So that's what we had to do in imaging a near perfect future that inspires hope.

Five years ago, we released ‘Dear Alice’. An encapsulation of a Solarpunk future for Chobani.
Even all these years later, we still get tagged in repurposed content for this by the Solarpunk community!
Unlike Cyberpunk or Steampunk, Solarpunk envisions a future that you'd actually probably quite like to live in! It's not intended to be just an aesthetic, but a political movement towards a brighter and greener future.
Our short depicts humans, animals and nature all living and working harmoniously with non-invasive technology. It's a world where technology is used to enhance tried-and-true farming practices rather than to replace them with something that degrades nature. Solarpunk doesn't mean everyone has to live on a farm. Civilisations can still exist, and if you look closely, the buildings in the city incorporate greenery to bring nature to brick-and-mortar.
The central focus is on a woman narrating a letter written by a grandmother to her granddaughter about how she wants to leave behind a more sustainable future for her. It’s a nostalgic look towards a new era of agriculture, with beautifully crafted backgrounds, delicate animation and a completely unique score by long-time Ghibli composer (and absolute legend) Joe Hisaishi.

We can't quite believe it, but we've never posted an FX Animation Breakdown before! There's been such amazing FX work done on so many of our projects, we're definitely going to show you more of how it's done.
This film in particular was so FX heavy, we had to highlight the crazy work that went into it.
You all know we love an action sequence. But for this one, we took a pretty different approach than we usually do!
The entire thing was rendered through FX animation. The animator did their rough and tie-downs but instead of going into clean-up and BG paint, the FX team rendered the characters as well as animated the background FX (which is a super rare thing to do!). The result is this abstract representation of two magnificent powers colliding in an epic battle!!!

These two shots were alllllll about contrast. Two versions of the same soul face each other. One of our must-haves going into this project was to create duality through our visual language in order to show these two versions of the same person, Sirius and Orion.
We'd JUST seen Sirius and Orion shoot through the vacuum of space and crash into the planet Venus in an explosion of fire. So… we think at this moment, this first look, the stillness of their fixation on each other, says a lot.
It’s no moment of light relief though, it really goes to show the power these two hold. That nothing from all this world shattering chaos and destruction makes them even flinch. Badass.

Joining the feast will be boozy slushies courtesy of fellow characters Amaro and Walden, because no good idea has ever started with “maybe DON'T pour loads of rum into the slushie machine.”
Expect crispy chicken, reckless levels of sauce, cold drinks, and quite possibly the best ‘Gentrifried Chicken’ you’ve ever had.

We did not hold back on the intensity of this film. But even when making a film THIS action packed, you need a moment to slow down to catch your breath. Even if only for a few seconds, this scene was the perfect moment for that.
It’s one of the rare moments in the film where any character’s faces are shown. We wanted to take this moment to hint at a much bigger story and history by showing the faces of Ash and Garuda.

We created tension in this scene by building up the character’s movement until they battle. They start almost still, taunting each other. But if you’ve seen the whole film, you know what’s coming…
We also wanted the animation to have a real sense of weight. Making Sirius and Orion larger than life. Their presence is that of stealth, strength and focus.

We’re so excited to share our latest work, marking our second collaboration with Warframe!
It’s been such a rewarding experience, and a special shoutout to Rebb and the team for trusting us with this one.
The music video follows the intense rivalry of Sirius and Orion, featuring a sick track from Erra. The battle we see is between Orion, in crimson and obsidian, and Sirius, in tsavorite and silver.
It’s an epic, shonen-inspired music video, blending anime-style battles with serene moments in space. It’s super FX-heavy (one of our favourite things), and we move fluidly between character and FX animation to bring this dramatic, theatrical clash to life.

Noodle emerges from the pond and we see her all grown up!
After stealing a flute player’s clothes, she hoists up her trousers and walks off with her chin in the air - absolutely feeling herself.
This shot was a great opportunity to showcase the 60s style of animation we were referencing. With her clear expression of pride and swagger, her child-like cheeky nature sticks with her even once she’s aged.

We adopted a hybrid approach for the background paintings in the film, mixing real watercolour paintings on paper with a digital polish and final paint.
The natural behaviour of watercolours on paper, and the way pigments bleed and absorb into the surface of textured paper, is really difficult to replicate digitally. With traditional materials, you get those organic qualities for free, which was perfect for the era we were paying homage to.
We're really happy with how it turned out. Admittedly, we didn't use this method for every shot, but it was an interesting experiment and we believe it made a huge difference to the overall look and feel of the film.
