Many people are describing the police action against students on 20 July 2026 as an attack on democracy.
For many, this may feel unprecedented. But for countless Indian Muslims, allegations of excessive force, police crackdowns, and the suppression of peaceful protests are painful memories they have carried for years.
Those speaking out today should also remember 15 December 2019, when police entered Jamia Millia Islamia, and the incidents that followed at Aligarh Muslim University, Shaheen Bagh, and during the nationwide protests in December 2019. Those events led to allegations of excessive force, injuries, arrests, and deep trauma for many families.
If excessive force was used against protesters today, it deserves an impartial investigation and accountability. But concern for democracy should not begin only when one particular group is affected.
The right to peaceful protest, equal protection under the law, and respect for human rights belong to every citizen, regardless of religion, ideology, or political affiliation.
If we remained silent when others suffered, but speak only when our own are affected, we should reflect on that inconsistency.
A democracy is strengthened not by selective outrage, but by standing consistently for justice, constitutional rights, and human dignity for all.

यह अब भारत के Gen Z का विरोध बनता दिखाई दे रहा है। इसकी सबसे बड़ी वजह यह है कि यह आंदोलन केवल ज़मीनी स्तर पर ही नहीं, बल्कि ऑनलाइन स्पेस में भी तेज़ी से फैल रहा है।
शिक्षा मंत्री धर्मेंद्र प्रधान की बेटी निमिषा के सोशल मीडिया अकाउंट पर कई यूज़र्स ने सवाल पूछे कि "जब आपके पिता भारत के शिक्षा मंत्री हैं, तो आपने पढ़ाई के लिए अमेरिका क्यों चुना?" इसके बाद व्यापक ऑनलाइन चर्चा हुई।
अब कई यूज़र्स Tufts University के सोशल मीडिया अकाउंट पर भी टिप्पणी कर रहे हैं। स्क्रीनशॉट में दिखाई देने वाली कुछ टिप्पणियाँ इस प्रकार हैं:

- “You have a student whose father has killed students in India.”

This protest is no longer limited to CJP or any single organization.
It now appears to have evolved into a broader movement among India's Gen Z. One of the key reasons is that the campaign is gaining momentum not only on the ground but also across online platforms.
Many users questioned Nimisha, the daughter of India's Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, on her social media accounts, asking: "If your father is India's Education Minister, why did you choose to study in the United States?" The issue subsequently sparked widespread discussion online.
Now, several users are also posting comments on Tufts University's official social media accounts. Some of the comments visible in the screenshots include:

सीजेपी आंदोलन के अभिजीत दीपके के अलावा बाकी दो साथी सौरभ दास और आशुतोष रांका दिन भर केंद्रीय मंत्री जेपी नड्डा के आवास पर बैठे रहे। @Wangchuk66 को @DelhiPolice ने पहले ही सरकारी अस्पताल में भर्ती करा दिया है। आप सोच सकते हैं कि, अभिजीत ‘मैनेज’ नहीं हैं, या अभिजीत के ‘मैनेज’ होने का ‘मैनेजरों’ को यक़ीन नहीं रहा होगा। सोनम वांगचुक को लेकर यह ख़बर सियासी गलियारे में उड़ती रहती है कि उनकी निगाहें ‘राज्यपाल’ या ‘उपराज्यपाल’ की कुर्सी पर हैं।
अब सवाल सौरभ दास और आशुतोष रांका का है। जिस वक्त वो सरकार से ‘बातचीत’ के नाम पर जगत प्रकाश नड्डा के शासकीय आवास पर बैठे हुए थे, तस्वीरें क्लिक करा रहे थे, उस समय दिल्ली पुलिस आंदोलनरत युवाओं, छात्रों, छात्राओं पर बेरहमी से लाठियां भांज रही थी। किसी को गंभीर चोट भी लग सकती है, या जान भी जा सकती है, इसकी परवाह किए बगैर पुलिस ने कोई कसर नहीं छोड़ी है। अब सवाल यह है कि सौरभ दास और आशुतोष रांका जिस तथाकथित बात-चीत के लिए जेपी नड्डा के आवास पर गए थे, क्या उस वार्ता में पुलिस की क्रूरता का ज़िक्र हुआ? क्या जेपी नड्डा के आवास पर ‘टीबी’ नहीं था? क्या सौरभ दास और आशुतोष रांका के पास मोबाइल नहीं था? जिसमें पल-पल की अपडेट आ रहा हों?
अब इस CJP प्रोटेस्ट के बाहर की दुनिया देखिए। राहुल गांधी लगातार छात्रों के बीच जाकर उनके मुद्दे पर बात करते रहे हैं। छात्रों को संबोधित करते हुए वो ना तो किसी दल विशेष को बुरा भला कहते हैं, और ना ही किसी व्यक्ति विशेष को बुरा भला कहते हैं। छात्रों के साथ उनका संबोधन पूरी तरह गैर-राजनीतिक मालूम होता है। छात्रों के बीच उनकी मौजूदगी ने सत्ताधारी दल और उसके ‘थिंक टैंक’ की बेचैनी बढाई, राहुल के लिए लामबंद होती आवाज़ों में विघ्न डालने के लिए ‘जंतर-मंतर’ किया गया, ताकि कोई एक व्यक्ति विपक्ष की आवाज़ ना बन सके। सरकारों का चरित्र भी यही रहा है, कि वो विपक्ष भी अपनी मर्जी का चाहती है। लेकिन इस सरकार को राहुल विपक्ष में भी बर्दाश्त नहीं हैं।
विपक्ष को निष्क्रिय साबित करने के लिए, ‘जंतर-मंतर’ को रचा गया। लेकिन अब स्थिती बदल गई है। सत्ताधारी दल के अनुषांगिक संगठन भी स्वीकारते रहे हैं, कि युवाओं में बढ़ती बेरोज़गारी, निराशा सरकार के प्रति नाराज़गी का सबब बन रही है। दिल्ली में इतनी बड़ी तादाद में भी युवा आंदोलनरत हो सकते हैं, इसकी उम्मीद ‘जंतर-मंतर’ रचने वालो को भी नहीं रही होगी। युवाओं का यह आंदोलन ‘जंतर-मंतर’ रचने वालो के हाथ से निकलता नज़र आ रहा है। सत्ताधारी दल का एजेंडा भी ध्वस्त होता नज़र आ रहा है। अब इन युवाओं को नेतृत्व की ज़रूरत है। वो नेतृत्व ना तो सोनम वांगचुक में नज़र आता है और ना ही ‘कॉकरोचों’ में! अब सवाल है कि वह नेतृत्व कौन करेगा? घूम फिरकर सबकी निगाहें एक ही शख्स पर जाकर रुक जाती हैं, और वह शख्स @RahulGandhi है!
