๐ Ocean Layers: Life in the Sunlight Zone
โ๏ธ The Sunlight Zone, or Epipelagic Zone, is home to approximately 25% of the oceanโs biodiversity. The abundance of sunlight and warmth in this upper layer creates ideal conditions for a rich variety of marine life. As a result, it supports some of the oceanโs most productive ecosystems.
๐๐ฆ๐ฆญ Species found in the Sunlight Zone include fish, shallow-water corals, sea turtles, dolphins, whales, sharks, and marine plants. Seabirds depend on these waters for food, while marine mammals such as whales and seals are often drawn here to feed.๐ฆ๐ชธ๐ข

๐ Ocean Layers: Introduction to the Sunlight Zone
โ๏ธ The Sunlight Zone, also known as the Epipelagic Zone, is the oceanโs uppermost layer, extending from the surface down to approximately 200 meters (660 feet).
As its name suggests, this zone receives enough sunlight to support photosynthesis, the process by which organisms convert sunlight and carbon dioxide into energy and oxygen.
๐ฑ Among the most important inhabitants of this zone are phytoplankton which form the foundation of the marine food web, supporting countless species and helping sustain life throughout the ocean.

๐ How well do you know the ocean beneath the surface?
๐ The open ocean is the largest ecosystem on Earth. It is a colossal space, which can be divided into five distinct zones, each characterized by different levels of sunlight, temperature, and pressure, and types of marine life:
โ๏ธ The Sunlight Zone (Epipelagic Zone)
๐ The Twilight Zone (Mesopelagic Zone)
๐ The Midnight Zone (Bathypelagic Zone)
๐ The Abyss (Abyssopelagic Zone)
๐ณ๏ธ The Trenches (Hadal Zone)
Each zone is a unique environment, supporting distinct but related ecosystems, and communities adapted to life under different conditions.
Throughout this video series, we will explore each of these ocean zones, discovering their characteristics, and the creatures that inhabit them beneath the waves. ๐๐๐ฆ

๐ Todayโs Most Valuable Player: Salmon ๐ ๐
Salmon are both keystone and indicator speciesโrevealing the health of rivers, oceans, and everything in between. ๐ When water warms, pollution spreads, or food webs shift, salmon are among the first to show signs of stress.
Their importance runs deep:
๐ฆ Nourishment for bears, eagles, and forests
๐ฑ Nutrients that strengthen ecosystems
๐ฅ A vital source for Indigenous communities, fisheries, and cultures
Protecting salmon means protecting ecosystems, cultures, and communities that depend on them. ๐

๐ Ocean Voices: Bottlenose Dolphins ๐ฌ๐ถ๐
๐ Bottlenose dolphins get their name from their distinctive short, rounded snout, which resembles the neck of an old-fashioned glass bottle.
Bottlenose dolphins rely on a remarkable range of sounds to navigate and communicate beneath the waves. They produce three main types of vocalizations:
Whistles
Echolocation clicks
Burst-pulse sounds (click trains)
โ ๏ธ However, this natural soundscape is increasingly under threat.
Many marine species depend on sound for communication, navigation, and other behaviour โ but human-made noise is disrupting these vital functions.

๐ Todayโs Most Vulnerable Player: European Eels ๐ ๐ข
European eels have one of the most remarkable life cycles in the animal kingdom. Born in the Sargasso Sea, their larvae travel thousands of kilometers across the Atlantic before reaching rivers across Europe and North Africa. ๐
But their incredible journey is under threat. Over the past 20 years, eel numbers have plummeted, and the species is now listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. ๐
Main threats include:
๐ฃ Overfishing and illegal trade
๐ง Dams and barriers blocking migration routes
๐ง Pollution and habitat loss

๐ Ocean Voices: Humpback Whales ๐๐ถ
Named after the distinctive hump on their backs, humpback whales swim through every ocean on Earth. ๐โจ
They produce a range variety of vocalizations used for feeding and social interactionโsome forming complex, repetitive patterns known as songs. ๐ผ
While all humpbacks can vocalize, scientists believe that only males sing, most commonly in breeding grounds, with individuals often singing the same version of a song simultaneously ๐. ๐ถ๐
๐ Beyond songs, all humpbacks also use callsโshorter, non-repetitive sounds linked to feeding and social behaviors.
