The “canary in the coal mine” once warned workers when air conditions had already become dangerous. Today, the mineral industry has more tools, technology, and knowledge than ever to proactively protect air quality and worker health. But there is still more to do, especially as demand grows for the minerals needed to reduce emissions via technologies like electric vehicles, batteries, renewable energy systems, and emissions reduction infrastructure.
Responsible mineral exploration can play a role by both discovering those critical mineral deposits and improving dust control, monitoring particulate matter and hazardous gases, reducing diesel emissions, incorporating lower-carbon technologies, and planning proactively for air quality impacts from the earliest stages of development.

The Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) is best known for hosting the world’s largest mineral exploration and mining convention every March in Toronto.
But did you know PDAC also works year-round to advocate for its members and help strengthen Canada’s mineral exploration and development sector?
Through research, policy recommendations and engagement with government, PDAC helps ensure decisions affecting the industry are informed by evidence, member expertise, real-world experience and long-term perspective.

A strong future for mineral exploration and development depends on the next generation. This #NationalMiningWeek, we’re highlighting programs that help make that possible. Earlier this month, PDAC’s Student-Industry Mineral Exploration Workshop (S-IMEW) gave students hands-on field experience and a closer look at careers in exploration, the vital first step in Canada’s mineral development pipeline.
