“AI coding tools represent the same kind of leap. You still have to tell the machine what to build. You still have to understand what it’s doing well enough to check its work. And these coding tools still make mistakes when generating code, so you need an experienced software engineer to fix them. The job shifts from typing to thinking, which for most good engineers is the part we love anyway.”

The problem when something like Belfast happens is this:
- Every politician is pressurised to condemn what happened, whether it's what happened or the response to what happened using WORDS, not ACTIONS.
- The WORDS give the public the false sense that something will be done about the quite obvious problem that many parts of the UK are unrecognisable. But in a week, all will be forgotten, and no ACTIONS will be taken to prevent something like that happening again.
This has been a huge security issue for some time now, but nothing has been done about it. On the contrary, any ACTION that the govt have taken is to make the problem worse.
This would not happen in a business. Why is it happening in politics and most importantly, to our country?
@KevinASchofield If you look at what happened to Henry Novak and then what happened in Belfast and think the problem is Elon Musk and Richard Tice, you shouldn't be leader of the country.
Simple as.
@MatthewOToole2 How else are people supposed to bring about change?
If legislators/lawmakers/politicians continue to ignore blatantly obvious security issues, what are local communities supposed to do exactly?
Genuinely remarkable that two barbaric murders can take place and the same useful idiots are more concerned about:
- What Tommy Robinson said
- What Elon Musk said
And not about
- Solving the problem that is that we have no idea who is living in our local communities, and that is an enormous safety/security risk.
It's alright for those who work in Whitehall every day.
People are just angry because:
- They don't feel safe in their community
- They don't know who lives in their local community.
- The govt are doing next to nothing about it.
That has nothing to do with race and everything to do with legitimate concerns about living a safe life.
@BBCPolitics Never thought Ed Davey would ask a sensible question but interesting that he's decided to in this instance.
NHS spending far too high, needs urgent reform.
@BBCNewsnight We're debt ridden and have lots of low quality jobs. Also stifled by regulation and are a country that incentivises legal proceedings rather than growth/progress/elite performance.
The circle tends to be:
Man who shouldn't be in country commits awful crime.
Victim left helpless
Local community and others get angry because man who committed crime shouldn't be in the country.
Politicians/elites/useful idiots tell local community to 'calm down', that they're 'racists, 'backward' or 'extremists' etc
A few weeks go by
It happens again
Repeat
Ed Davey asks if there should be a crackdown on platforms like X as "extremists" exploit anger aided by “social media barons like Elon Musk” and their “algorithms”
Keir Starmer says “we should all be calling for calm”

"Almost twenty states currently have statutes criminalizing adultery,
fornication, or both. Most of those statutes were enacted in the 1800s
and were vigorously enforced. In fact, enforcement of adultery and
fornication statutes appears to have been commonplace until the 1940s
and 1950s"
Another example of how many in Western countries take their liberty for granted.
Also would not surprise me if the dating crisis we are witnessing today is a consequence of the liberalisation of such laws. More choice doesn't necessarily mean humans will make a rational choice to achieve a better outcome.
“We noted by the 1970s [in western Europe] that when governments undertook primary responsibility for the basic duties of the head of the family, the drive in people weakened. Welfare undermined self-reliance. People did not have to work for their families’ well-being. A handout became a way of life. The downward spiral was relentless as motivation and productivity went down. People lost the drive to achieve because they paid too much in taxes. They became dependent on the state for their basic needs… We thought it best to reinforce the Confucian tradition that a man is responsible for his family.”
Lee Kuan Yew
Responsibility is integral to meaning and elite performance.
A couple of fascinating ideas from 'The Crowd' by Gustave Le Bon. Essential reading on the subject of marketing imo.
- "Men are ruled by ideas, sentiments and customs - matters which are of the essence of ourselves. Institutions and laws are the outward manifestation of our character, the expression of its needs. Being its outcome, institutions and laws cannot change this character."
- "The philosopher who studies social phenomena should bear in mind that side by side with their theoretical value they possess a practical value, and that this latter, so far as the evolution of civilisation is concerned, is alone of importance. The recognition of this fact should render him very circumspect with regard to the conclusions that logic would seem at first to enforce upon him."
Philosophy, or being a philosopher, as Will Durant alluded to, is a practical pursuit more than anything. The moment we lose cite of this truism, we risk pursuing ideas for the sake of ideas, without evaluating their practical significance/utility.
If you want to be good a scenario planning (i.e. have an uncanny sense for future events), you'll need to:
- Research present key trends
- Determine which are predictable/uncertain
- Decide which uncertainties are most influential
- Think of stories of the future based on the uncertainties
- Think of the implications of those stories
- Use the implications to start over and "develop a sense of the impending surprises that you cannot ignore."
@Star_Knight12 And it’s costing an absolute bomb! Whereas you’d do well to continue using older versions of the AI and mastering these versions to enhance productivity, research etc!
@JohnNosta Not really, probably just looking to outsource the monotonous tasks.
The stigma of AI use is slightly misguided imo. Intelligent people will continue to read, critically think and enhance curiosity. That stuff is habitual.
@ai_sentience An interesting conversation that isn't being had yet is whether humans will afford a conscious AI the same 'human rights' that humans possess?
Right then, for all you punters out there, I’m having a bit of fun in the lead up to the World Cup 🏆.
Yes, gambling is a mugs game.
But I’m going to try and turn £5 into £1,000,000.
And document my journey!!
I have already started, but this thread is open for those who want to join, and share their tips!
