On September 12, 2001, NATO invoked Article 5—its collective defence clause—for the first and only time, rallying all member nations to support the United States after the 9/11 attacks.

Canada contributed significantly to the subsequent NATO-led mission in Afghanistan (2001–2014). The "Highway of Heroes" is a stretch of Highway 401 in eastern Ontario, where fallen Canadian soldiers' remains are solemnly transported by convoy from CFB Trenton to Toronto (and onward to burial), with crowds often lining bridges to pay tribute.

During the mission, 158 Canadian Armed Forces members died in service, with thousands more injured—all in solidarity with the U.S. and NATO allies following 9/11.
Other NATO allies suffered significant casualties as well: the United Kingdom lost around 457 personnel, France 90, Germany 62, Italy 53, Denmark 43, and many others (total coalition deaths, including non-NATO partners, exceeded 3,500, with non-U.S. NATO members accounting for roughly 1,100–1,200 fatalities).

In September, 2011 President Obama wrote a personal letter to Prime Minister Harper and all Canadians thanking them for coming to the rescue of tens of thousands of Americans on 9-11.

He wrote:

“In one of the darkest moments of our history, Canada stood by our side and showed itself to be a true friend,”

“We remember with gratitude and affection how the people of Canada offered us the comfort of friendship and extraordinary assistance that day and in the following days by opening their airports, homes and hearts to us.”

“On this anniversary, we recognize all the gestures of friendship and solidarity shown to us by Canada and its people and give thanks for our continuing special relationship.”

By the end of the day, more than 33,000 people, predominantly American, on 224 aircraft had arrived in Canada - primarily in Vancouver, Gander, Halifax, Goose Bay, Whitehorse, Edmonton and Calgary.

USS Abraham Lincoln’s resupply problems weren’t a mystery. Iran hit NSA Bahrain—the 5th Fleet’s main logistics hub—hard in February. The Navy had to shift to Diego Garcia, 2,200 miles away instead of ~800. Transit times roughly tripled, so replenishment dropped from every ~3 days to ~10. That’s the logistics reality behind the shortages and 200+ days at sea without a port call. The Pentagon fired the editor of Stars and Stripes for telling the truth.

We had a chance to see the newly unveiled Herman Melville statue in New Bedford's Historic District. It is next to the Seaman's Bethel and Whaling Museum.
Really impressive ! It is ironic that Melville wrote much of his book - Moby Dick while at his farm in Pittsfield, MA.

The City of Worcester is heartbroken by the tragic passing of Worcester Police Officer Kurt Solomon.

Officer Solomon dedicated more than three decades of his life to serving and protecting our city, earning the respect of his fellow officers and our community. But Kurt was much more than the uniform he wore. He was a proud son of Worcester, a father, son, brother, friend, neighbor, and U.S. Army veteran. He grew up here, attended Gates Lane and South High, and ultimately devoted 31 years to the Worcester Police Department.

I will personally miss Officer Solomon’s caring personality and the warm smile with which he always greeted me at City Council meetings. Those small interactions spoke to the kind of person he was and will be greatly missed.

Our hearts are with his sons, family, friends, neighbors, and the entire Worcester Police Department as they grieve this tremendous loss.

As the investigation continues, we ask our community to respect the privacy of Officer Solomon’s family and allow law enforcement to do its work. Today, our focus remains on supporting those who are grieving and honoring a man who gave so much of his life to Worcester.

On behalf of a grateful city, we thank Officer Solomon for his dedicated service to our country, our city, and our community.

May he rest in peace.
