Australia isn't the best country in the world.

Yes, it is perfectly acceptable for a woman to shoot a crazy man who is approaching her.

Men are stronger than women. If he were to start assaulting her, it would further strengthen her case for self-defense.

Self-defense doesn't require the percieved attacker to be armed, it only requires you to be in fear for your life. Dude was irate and repeatedly approaching her - this is textbook self-defense.
