An Israeli army sniper shot 16-year-old Palestinian teenager Mahmoud Al-Durra while he was collecting firewood in the Gaza Strip in October 2025. He was then detained while wounded and subjected to beatings and mistreatment for approximately nine hours at the Bureij refugee camp.

Mahmoud was later transferred to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in coordination with the International Committee of the Red Cross, where doctors were forced to amputate his right leg.

The injury ended his career as a licensed football player and shattered his dream of becoming a professional athlete.

At the heart of Mahmoud’s story is the name of his brother, Muhammad Al-Durra, the Palestinian child who was killed by Israeli gunfire during the Second Intifada in 2000. Images of Muhammad became deeply etched in the collective Palestinian memory, turning him into an icon of the Palestinian cause and a symbol of the suffering of Palestinian children under occupation.

Today, Mahmoud lives with his family in their severely damaged home, trying to adapt to a new life after losing his leg, while facing the harsh conditions imposed by the war.

🔴 Six-year-old Sila Abu Karim’s life changed in an instant after she was injured by shrapnel during a strike near her family’s home in the Maghazi refugee camp in central Gaza.

The shrapnel pierced her back, severely damaging her vertebrae and leaving her with extreme spinal instability. She is now unable to stand or sit normally, living with her body bent and her head pressed against her abdomen.
