Ireland is now the most expensive country in the EU for housing, health costs, alcohol and electricity, according to new figures from Eurostat.

Overall, prices in Ireland are 36% higher than the EU average, making it the second most expensive country in the bloc behind Denmark.

The figures also show Ireland has the highest housing costs in Europe, while alcohol and tobacco prices are more than double the EU average.

Met Éireann has issued a nationwide Status Yellow High Temperature Warning, with temperatures expected to exceed 27°C and potentially reach 31°C in some areas on Thursday.

Forecasters say Ireland is set for a "short, sharp burst of heat", with warm nights expected too.

The warning comes into effect at 12pm on Tuesday and remains in place until 9am on Friday.
