⚠️ Black ice is one of the most dangerous winter hazards because you often can’t see it. It forms when moisture freezes on roads, bridges, sidewalks, and shaded areas—making surfaces look just wet when they’re actually icy.
Stay safe and stay aware of changing road conditions while temperatures drop below freezing overnight. The best practice is to stay at home and off the roads if at all possible.
@NWSHuntsville Good morning! All rain here! 🌧️
We wanted to see if you could answer a couple of questions for us-
1. What time frame do you anticipate the rain leaving Madco?
2. What is your confidence level that the roads will be dry before the frigid temperatures arrive?
[615A] Heavy rain & a few storms will continue to expand across the TN Valley thru 830A, with rainfall rates of 0.25-0.5”/hr leading to ponding on roads and minor flooding. Outside of the blue (freezing) line, significant accumulation of freezing rain/sleet will continue. #HUNwx
Seeing ice accumulation? Please let us know!
How to measure ice: find an iced covered object (branch fencing, sidewalk, etc.) in an open area. Avoid taking measurements on objects that are sheltered. Please provide when, where, duration, and amount. Thanks! #HUNwx
You've probably seen signs warning that bridges freeze before other roads, but do you know why? This occurs because bridges have an open space underneath and cold air surrounds the bridge above and below. https://t.co/m7TQNdiKdO #WeatherReady
[8:57 AM] Freezing rain/sleet continues to fall over the TN Valley with snow in southern TN. Travel conditions continue to be hazardous as temperatures remain below freezing. Please avoid travel if possible this morning!! #HUNwx
@Toney_FD is on the scene of a residential structure fire in the 100 block of Planters Rd. Meridianville, Hazel Green, Toney, and Bobo VFDs are on the scene. Please avoid this area.
[3:20 PM] Curious on why the forecast is changing for this weekend? We are still waiting for this system to come ashore on the west coast! Forecast tools should improve as this happens over the next 24 hours, so check back for updates as forecast details become clearer! #HUNwx
Now is the time to prepare for the possibility of winter weather this weekend. A little preparation now can make a big difference if power outages occur and you need to shelter in place for a few days.
Prepare for the worst, hope for the best!
Before the storm arrives
• 🔦 Charge devices: phones, battery packs, flashlights
• 🕯️ Have light without flame risk: flashlights > candles
• 🥫 Food & water: at least 2–3 days (no-cook options)
• 🧤 Warm layers: hats, gloves, blankets—homes lose heat fast
• 🚗 Fuel up vehicles early; gas stations may lose power
• 🌳 Trim weak branches near your house if time allows
• 🚪 Seal drafts: towels at doors, close unused rooms
• 🚰 Protect pipes: let faucets drip, open cabinet doors
• 🔥 Never use grills or generators indoors!
Stay prepared, Huntsville-Madison County!
