40 years ago I created this drill. It takes about 20 minutes to do and might be the most important mental training you do this year.
The drill helps you rewire how your Reticular Activating System (RAS) filters future stimuli and self-talk.
The RAS is the gatekeeper of your attention. It decides what information your brain deems important enough to notice, based on what you train it to look for.
When you run the “Decide to Survive” drill:
✅You’re installing new awareness cues.
✅You’re anchoring critical decision points.
✅You’re building emotional recognition for danger, hesitation, gut instinct, and movement.

Think about how most self-defense training is structured…
Someone grabs you, throws a punch, points a gun — and the drill begins.
That’s where almost all the time is spent. The physical fight. The re-action.
But here’s the thing: violence rarely starts there. It has a timeline. There are signals, patterns, moments where awareness and a few words could have changed everything.
We call this the 3-D’s
DETECT
DEFUSE
DEFEND
Two-thirds of staying safe takes place in those earlier moments — detecting danger before it develops, defusing it before it turns physical. And almost nobody trains that.
If you spend all your training practicing how to get out of a headlock, you also spent all your time practicing getting into one.
If you want to understand the framework behind situational awareness and de-escalation — and how to actually train for the full timeline of violence — click here to read the whole article: https://t.co/Z64p2hvYp6

This is deep. This is true. I love this cartoon’s message.
Here’s what I got from it:
“Defeat should always come as a surprise.”
Here’s what I mean:
It’s sometimes easier to focus on fear because the fear is now and the goal is in the future. We get a fear spike right now because we are visualizing a future negative event. By focusing on fear, we debilitate ourselves in the present.
I’ve used the acronym F.E.A.R. — False Expectations Appearing Real — for a few decades. This cartoon perfectly depicts it. Charlie Brown is suffering right now over something that hasn’t happened yet. And Snoopy, in his quiet wisdom, reminds him: on all the other days, we will not die. Focus on those days.
The Remedy?

THE MODERN MONK ON THE MOUNTAINTOP
For most of human history, the path to mastery of the self required distance from the world. The monk left the village. The philosopher climbed the mountain. The martial artist disappeared into a remote temple. The purpose was simple: remove noise, reduce distraction, and dedicate years to studying the self in relation to reality.
But the world those traditions were built for no longer exists.
Today, the average person consumes more information in a single day than earlier generations might encounter in months or even years. News cycles, social media, global conflict, economic pressure, and digital communication create a constant stream of input. Time itself feels different under that pressure.
In this environment, retreating to a literal mountaintop is no longer preparation for life. In many cases, it becomes avoidance.
The modern world does not allow us to disappear for years and return prepared for what reality demands.
The density of information, stress, and unpredictability requires a different kind of training environment—one that develops awareness of the self while remaining immersed in the world as it actually is.
What is the modern equivalent of the monk on the mountaintop?
Surprisingly, the closest answer may be a digital library.

Many people think flinching is a sign of weakness. They don’t realize it’s a hardwired, DNA-level, spinal reflex.
When I train police officers, military personnel, MMA fighters, and boxers around the world, they all think they won’t flinch — because they associate it with something that isn’t congruent with the Type A personality, the Protector Warrior.
Look at the picture above. Left side. Right side. Same man.
If it happened to Ali, it sure as shit can happen to you.
In this article, I break down exactly why this happens — and how it can happen to you - and me!

The Legacy. The Imitators. The Choice.
High Gear® is now a global phenomenon. But with greatness comes imitation.
The impact of High Gear® was immediate and far-reaching. It didn’t just change the way people trained; it changed their understanding of violence. It provided a fast-track to developing competence, confidence, and a visceral understanding of what works—and what doesn’t—in a real fight.
From elite military and law enforcement units to MMA fighters and everyday citizens, High Gear® became the gold standard for realistic scenario training.
High Gear® is used by Elite military, law enforcement, and tactical professionals worldwide.
Trusted by the best: Elite fighters, media recognition, and decades of proven results.
Of course, with great innovation comes imitation. As I said at the start, my creation has been copied by others in the industry. But as the old saying goes:
“Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness.”
- Oscar Wilde
You have a choice: settle for the imitation, or invest in the original. Invest in the system born from decades of obsession with realism, safety, and performance. Invest in greatness.

The Problem That Sparked a Revolution
It all started with a “Frankenstein suit” and a question that changed everything.
In the world of force-on-force training, there are defining moments—leaps in innovation that forever alter the landscape.
The creation of the High Gear® suit by Tony Blauer was one of those moments.
But the story doesn’t begin with a state-of-the-art lab and a team of engineers. It starts in the 1980s, with a “Frankenstein suit” cobbled together from pieces of boxing, hockey, and baseball gear.
This makeshift armor was the physical manifestation of a problem that had plagued realistic training for years: how do you simulate real-world violence without sacrificing safety or realism? The gear of the era was either too bulky, hindering natural movement and eliminating the essential element of fear, or too flimsy, offering inadequate protection. Blauer, a pioneer in reality-based self-defense, knew there had to be a better way.
The catalyst for change came in 1980 with a drill Blauer developed called the “Panic Attack.” This unique force-on-force scenario pushed the boundaries of training, but it also highlighted the limitations of the available equipment. The need for something better became undeniable. This was the spark that ignited a five-year quest to create a suit that would revolutionize scenario-based training.

In a real fight, it doesn’t matter who’s right...
what matters is who’s left.”
A Reality Check on Real Fights
Let’s get one thing straight: bad shit happens without your consent. It doesn’t wait for you to be ready. It doesn’t care about your plans. The first step to real safety is pulling your head out of the sand and accepting this uncomfortable truth.
This isn’t about being paranoid. It’s about being aware, then prepared.
What You Need to Understand:
✅Accept that bad shit can happen without your consent.
✅Research how the reactive brain bypasses the cognitive brain during sudden violence.
[When a threat is sudden and explosive, your rational brain gets hijacked by the amygdala—your survival system. This “amygdala hijack” triggers a massive fear spike and floods your body with adrenaline. It also triggers a flinch.]
Learn to manage the sudden fear spike triggered by imminent and immediate danger. Training is the only way to inoculate yourself against the paralysis of fear.
