The passing of David Malouf reminds us of all that his genius gave to Australia and the world.
In both poetry and prose, David dealt in hard truths and deep insights. He captured the harsh, vast and intense beauty of our land and the lives it shaped.
His creativity breathed new life into ancient classics and brought him international acclaim in the process.
Throughout it all, he remained a figure of great gentleness, profound strength and unwavering humanity.
Today, generations of writers and readers will be mourning an inspiration.
For as long as David Malouf's words are read, the power of his work will endure.
May he rest in peace.
Later in the evening, they were reunited with their five teammates who had made the same decision the night before.
They will be safe here. They will be at home here. They are welcome here in Australia.
Last night I travelled to Brisbane and Sydney in case any additional members of the Iranian women’s football team wanted to seek assistance from Australia.
Two people, one player and one member of the support team asked to stay in Australia & I signed the paperwork for them to be issued with humanitarian visas which were processed overnight.
Last night I was able to tell five women from the Iranian Women’s Soccer team that they are welcome to stay in Australia, to be safe and have a home here.
I will not repeat her words, but last night and today's comments from Pauline Hanson are wrong and cruel.
They are comments not worthy of someone who holds public office.
Please just apologise.
Everyone will wish we still had Rob but his music, his kindness and his instinctive warmth will never disappear.
My thoughts are with his wife Leslie, his daughters and everyone who’s part of the Midnight Oil family.
For me, Rob Hirst was characterised by three words: genius, generous and genuine.
Whether I saw him performing to stadium sized crowds with the Oil’s or at the back of a festival with “The Break” he never stopped giving.
A couple of years ago I ran into a friend who I hadn’t seen since we were teenagers at a Midnight Oil concert. I reminded him that he’d caught one of Rob Hirst’s drum sticks during the gig, and even though it was 40 years later he said “and I still have it”.
@MiltonDickMP Luch’s popularity was possibly the only thing every member of the House of Representatives could agree on.
His warmth and sense of humour were second to none. His smile was a perpetual invitation to friendship in a room that gravitates to conflict.
May he rest in peace.
Wishing for your 2026 to be a year of safety and peace. Happy New Year.
A special thank you to students Anaam and Jonathan for their incredible artwork.
The thoughts of all Australians are with the community and federal agencies stand ready to offer whatever assistance Vic Police need in their investigation.
All Australians have the right to be safe and feel safe in their communities.
I’ve been briefed by AFP Commissioner Krissy Barrett and Director General of ASIO Mike Burgess on the arrest made by WA Police this afternoon as part of Operation Dalewood.
This is an ongoing WA Police investigation but as with any matter concerning threats to social cohesion or national security they will have the full support of federal agencies.
