🌳 Winter is a busy season at our Bosques Yungas project in Argentina.

When the cold set in, our team wrapped protective covers around the youngest trees to shield them from frost, filled nursery bags with soil ready to receive seeds, and tended to seedlings waiting for the warmth of spring.

And the good news? The trees from last planting season are already starting to sprout. But perhaps the most meaningful moment of all is seeing local children get involved.

Everything we plant today is the world they will inherit tomorrow.

Trees release huge amounts of water back into the atmosphere. Winds carry that moisture inland, where it falls as rain and can be recycled again.

The young oaks in our Bear Groves project, Transylvania, are enjoying their first full growing season. 🌱

After a rainy June and July, the trees are putting on healthy new growth, while wildflowers, mushrooms, insects, roe deer, and bears are making the most of the restored landscape.

Costa Rica once had one of the highest deforestation rates in Latin America. Today, nearly 60% of the country is covered by forest again. 🌿

And the recovery goes beyond trees.

Researchers on the Nicoya Peninsula recorded more than 16,000 hours of forest sounds and found that regenerating forests are beginning to resemble mature forests in the wildlife they support.

That comeback was made possible by decades of action, including stronger forest protection, more protected areas, and government incentives that reward landowners for conserving and restoring forests.

Costa Rica is a powerful reminder that forest loss can be reversed when restoration is backed for the long term.

At our Usambara Biodiversity Conservation project in Tanzania, volunteers and local community members are working side by side at the tree nursery, preparing seedlings for the upcoming rainy season. Some of these visitors came to explore the Usambara Mountains and ended up rolling up their sleeves to help care for the next generation of trees.

Once ready, these seedlings will travel from the nursery to our landscape restoration sites, where they will help restore degraded land, strengthen biodiversity, and support local communities. For us, that is what sustainable tourism looks like in practice.

🌳🥕 Fruit trees are often the first trees planted in a forest garden, and for good reason. They provide fresh fruit, shade for crops growing underneath, and something to sell at the local market once they mature.

This is the thinking behind our Forest Gardens project in the Simiyu Region, Tanzania, where local households build gardens that produce food, income, and shade all from the same small plot of land.

Checking on a young tree like this one is part of getting it established: staked upright, rooted well, growing steadily among the cassava and surrounding plants.

More than one-third of the world's remaining intact forests are found on Indigenous lands, according to research published in Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment.

Long before "forest restoration" became a global priority, Indigenous Peoples had already developed ways of living with forests that sustained both people and nature across generations.

Their knowledge reminds us that a healthy forest is a living system of relationships between land, water, wildlife, culture, and community.

As we mark the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, we recognize the invaluable role Indigenous communities continue to play in safeguarding the world's forests and the importance of respecting their rights, knowledge, and leadership in shaping the future of restoration.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy addressed the White House Conference on Conservation with a story that still feels remarkably relevant today.

A gardener warned that a tree wouldn't flower for a hundred years.
