Bringing the compact, economical stellarator fusion power plant to the grid through innovations in high-temp superconducting magnets and additive manufacturing.
Our Infinity Two fusion power plant will be designed to use deuterium-tritium fuel and breed new tritium as it operates. It's an elegant solution, but does every fusion power plant in a commercial fleet really need to produce tritium?
In the latest Journal of Fusion Science and Technology, our Senior Tritium Scientist & Tritium Plant Lead Mohamad Abdallah and other Type One Energy members explore a different approach. He envisions a coordinated fleet where some fusion power plants produce fuel and others produce power.
“We can start designing specific systems and thinking about commercial fleets of fusion reactors, and we can actually see a viable pathway to commercialize fusion.”
By specializing roles across a fleet of power plants, fusion could deploy faster, operate more efficiently, and unlock greater flexibility for the industry.

Type One Energy has a new U.S. patent! 🎉
CTO Thomas Sunn Pedersen, and Co-Founder, VP & Engineering Fellow David Anderson recently invented the Large Island Backside Divertor (LIBD) for Type One Energy. This is an innovative (and now patented) approach to solving a long-standing problem that stellarators have faced: inefficiencies in removing impurities. These impurities reduce fusion efficiency and require more frequent component replacement.
The LIBD patent uses large magnetic islands to guide the outflowing unburnt deuterium-tritium fuel for re-injection, fusion ash (helium), and impurities to the backside of a divertor structure embedded into the large island. This approach is designed to improve particle removal efficiency, resulting in more optimal fuel density control and purer plasma to enhance fusion efficiency and more durable components in our stellarator.
Congratulations to Thomas, David, and the entire Type One Energy team!
Commercial fusion will not be delivered by one company or one country acting alone. It requires strong supply chains, a skilled workforce, supporting regulation and sustained cooperation between governments, utilities, investors, and industry.
This deepening partnership between the United Kingdom and the United States, with leadership from the State of Tennessee and TVA, is an important step forward. Through our Project Infinity with TVA at Bull Run and the UK Infinity Fusion Consortium, Type One Energy and its partners are putting this imperative for cooperation into practice, building industrial capacity and establishing a clear path to commercial fusion power on the grid.
A first for #fusion. A first for Tennessee.
For the first time anywhere, Type One Energy has received a license for a fusion machine under a fusion-specific regulatory framework—a historic milestone for fusion energy and a major step forward for Project Infinity.
One step closer to bringing fusion from the drawing board to the grid! ⚡️
For the first time anywhere, a fusion-specific license has been issued for a fusion power plant. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee today presented Type One Energy with the first license under its first-of-a-kind, fusion-specific regulatory framework.
This first-of-its-kind framework creates a clear regulatory pathway for fusion machines, helping pave the way for commercial fusion power plants to move from design to commercial operation. For Type One Energy, this license is a major step forward for Project Infinity, our planned fusion development at TVA’s Bull Run Energy Complex.
Fusion has spent decades in the realm of scientific research. With this milestone, Tennessee is helping create the regulatory foundation to bring it into the energy future.
Every engineering milestone brings commercial fusion one step closer to reality. The latest step came on June 16, when the FORGED-PFC team reached an important milestone with the successful completion of its Preliminary Design Review (PDR) at Type One Energy's Knoxville headquarters.
The review brought together technical experts from national labs and universities. Completing the PDR enables the project to move forward into detailed design and procurement.
Congratulations to the FORGED-PFC team who contributed to this achievement. We look forward to supporting the next phase of development!
