A court in Hangzhou just awarded compensation after a worker was fired and replaced with AI.
That's the point: if AI displaces you, compensation shouldn't depend on whether you can afford a legal fight. UBI is the universal floor.
Evidence of AI-driven labour displacement is materializing. BLS data shows a distinct contraction in AI-exposed occupations, even amidst broader market growth.
We can't out-train automation. If AI does the work, the public should get dividends.
@mewsreporter There are already successful working variants of basic income that have been in place for decades.
A number of them were introduced / championed by conservatives.

A.I. no doubt here to stay, & will eventually result in new employment opportunities. However, the transition will be difficult as many traditional jobs disappear. Another compelling reason to begin implementing a program of universal basic income outlined by Dr. Suzuki. #cdnpoli
BREAKING: PM Carney announces Canada's first sovereign wealth fund—the Canada Strong Fund, "a fund that belongs to all Canadians... a new ownership opportunity for Canadians".
Canadians will be able to directly invest in the fund, but there is no mention of dividends.
UBI Works, Common Wealth Canada, and others have been calling for a SWF for years to give Canadians a share of our vast common wealth. We're glad to see movement on this, but there's a long way to go.
The fund will be seeded with $25B from the government to invest in Canadian projects & companies alongside the private sector. Yet, we have trillions of dollars in minerals and other natural resources that could be invested to pay dividends and give Canadians a real stake.
Let's hope this moves us towards what Norway, Alaska, and many other nations have proven to work.
BREAKING: Carney launches Canada's national AI for All strategy.
AI literacy, jobs, adoption in business/healthcare/education, sovereign Canadian AI, public supercomputer, and attracting talent.
“AI is here. The question is whether it will improve the lives of all Canadians or benefit only a few."
Still missing: AI Dividends via public/sovereign wealth funds, a form of UBI that is surging in interest across party lines. If we truly want AI for All, we should have a Tech Cheque for All.
Mark Carney makes the case for basic income ('social supports') to help workers impacted by AI.
"New jobs will be created, but old jobs will be lost... What happens to the people in those jobs - are they ready for the new jobs?"
Mark Carney (ex-Bank of Canada governor) laid out the case for basic income without saying it.
AI is hollowing out the middle class and lowering wages. Like past tech revolutions, workers may not see the benefits for generations.
Here's what he said.🧵
This is encouraging. Land value tax has more support than opposition in BC.
People can generally agree that public-created land value (from public investments like transit) should return to the public rather than being a windfall to property owners - including property owners.
This is a devastating poll for BC. Most people don't trust housing policy to improve affordability.
I suspect similar sentiment throughout Canada.
This is a hard look in the mirror and a mandate to think bigger. Same poll showed what people in BC actually do want:
If AI could disrupt half the workforce, we can’t wait until people lose their jobs to act.
The companies profiting from AI should help cushion the disruption. That starts with taxing the data centers powering it.

Not a good look for Canada.
For the first time ever, Canadian men 25-34 earn less than men 65+.
Younger workers barely moved in 25 yrs. Older men gained from land wealth, pensions, and benefits.
We tax work, reward property, and wonder why young people are falling behind.
