We are delighted to welcome Farid Saenong back to ANU - this time as an Indonesia Update Speaker!
Farid is a scholar of Islam and society whose work spans academia and government. He currently serves as Coordinating Special Adviser to the Indonesian Minister of Religious Affairs and is Director of the Centre of Islam and Global Challenge (IGC) at Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia - @uiiiofficial. He previously taught at @ourANU and Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington and has published extensively on classical and contemporary Islamic studies and Muslim society.
Together with Ismatu Ropi, he will present “The Paradox of Symbolic Harmony: Religious Freedom and State Management of Religion in Indonesia under the Prabowo Administration (2024–2026),” reflecting on the first two years of President Prabowo Subianto’s administration and the tension between growing perceptions of interfaith harmony and ongoing challenges to religious freedom.
