Where the wild things are 🌳

Ennerdale in the Lake District hosts one of the UK's longest-running wild restoration projects. Native species are gradually replacing forestry plantations, and the river Liza has been 'rewiggled' - allowed to choose its own path.

Britain’s largest butterfly - and one of the rarest - is a natural wonder of the Broads.

The British sub-species of swallowtail is found only in this National Park. Seen here feeding on milk parsley (a key food) it is a flutter of gold and black in a landscape shaped by water.

Morning! Here's a scene to start your day - dawn light catching in morning mist over the landscape of Cuckmere Haven, South Downs National Park - a nature-friendly patchwork of water meadows, grazing marshes and grasslands around the meandering River Cuckmere.

Craig Cerrig Gleisiad nature reserve in Bannau Brycheiniog National Park is a vertical forest; a beautiful hanging garden where woodland and rare arctic-alpine plants plants climb with the crags all the way up to 600 metres.

Unusually for owls, the short-eared owl is active during the day! 🦉 At this time of year they can be seen hunting low over moorland for field voles and small birds, performing acrobatic twists and turns. This one was spotted in North York Moors National Park.

On the wild Cowal Peninsula, Ardentinny looks over the deep waters of Loch Long—a fjord-like sea loch rich in history and wildlife 🌊

Once raided by Vikings, today it’s home to seals, porpoises, golden eagles and much more 🦅

On the edge of Exmoor National Park, the dramatic Valley of Rocks runs parallel to the sea, famous for its jagged cliffs, ancient rock formations—and the fearless feral goats that roam them 🐐

With a name as striking as its colours, the elephant hawk-moth is a true spectacle 🦋

Spotted in last year’s South Downs National Park moth survey, look out for them from May to August – fluttering at dusk through gardens, grasslands and woodland edges.
