Urban design isn't magic — there are specific reasons why we like some places more than others.
So here are 10 ways to make a street more (or less) interesting...
I’ll say it again — Paris wasn’t “always this way.”
It wasn’t even this way in late 2019 when I was there last.
This is new.
This was a choice.
This is leadership.

Seeing kids on London’s new segregated cycle ways makes me smile. I know change isn’t easy - and some people will always disagree - but enabling people, and families, to cycle safely is an inherently good thing.
At the weekend, I cycle into Lewisham (and further afield!) when I go to the shops and I stick things in my bike basket (amazing how much you can get in there). Sometimes I go out for longer rides - down the Thames Path, out into the leafy bits of Bromley.
🚨 Service Update: Major disruption on Anlaby Road near Park Street due to a broken-down bin wagon blocking both directions. Our team is on-site helping buses to turn.
Severe delays are expected for at least the next hour on Anlaby Road Lines 51-59. Thanks for your patience! 🚍
Thank you @LouHaigh for making this vital point. Five people are killed on our roads every single day, on average. We would not tolerate this level of harm in any other aspect of our lives
This is what a Russian Shahed drone with a thermobaric warhead looks like. Russia has started launching such drones en masse at Ukraine.
Russians use thermobaric ammunition specifically against civilians; it spreads burning liquid in corners and corridors of buildings where civilians typically take shelter, burning out the oxygen. The blast wave spreads over the entire area and affects the lungs, ears, etc. of people nearby.
It is also noted that Shahed with a thermobaric warhead demonstrates maximum effectiveness in enclosed spaces, as the cloud of napalm-like fuel can cover several rooms.

In a rare outing for our opinion site, I’ve written about why councils seeking to ban bikes from city centres due to delivery bikes are treating it as a “cycling problem” when it’s actually a law enforcement problem - these are mainly electric mopeds.

@linea_at_ftc @angus_young61@IAmKuriousBrown@Hullccnews Agreed. It needs to be seen as part of a city-wide network, and obviously needs linking to the city centre.
This is part of the original design ideas, obviously not consulted on.
THIS IS HUGE. Paris City Hall has announced that starting on Monday, Paris will limit (not ban) car traffic in the city centre, as cities like Ghent have done. They’re creating a limited traffic zone (ZTL) about 2 sq miles in size, to clean the air & create more space for people.
This junction has been transformed 🪄by widening the pavement and planting a tree🌳 It never needed to be so wide📏 but now offers a safer place to cross and a shady-haven just outside a local school🧑🎓
#Streettrees🌳are an integral element in healthier more human focused streets
@cllrmikeross They're indicating they are going to spend on infrastructure, and the hints are that cycling infra could get some decent money. Hull doesn't have any plans for cycling infra to spend it on.
The Dutch don't cycle because their country is flatter, milder, or morally superior to the rest of the world.
It's because they invest €30 per person each year building a network of 40,000 km. of separated lanes and 60,000 km. of traffic-calmed streets.

@IAmKuriousBrown@angus_young61 @linea_at_ftc @Hullccnews Yes, whilst they mention the schemes were fully consulted on they omit that the consultation ended up with their desired result of getting rid of all day bus lanes, because of their loaded questions.
