Nature needs space to survive. @theGEF support helped Kazakhstan create & expand 12+ protected areas, establish ecological corridors spanning 2.9 mln ha, and strengthen habitats for wildlife across the country. Along-term investment in biodiversity continues to deliver results #ForPeopleForPlanet

Firstly, back in 2021, 11 snow leopards were fitted w/ GPS trackers, helping researchers monitor their habitats & migration routes across Kazakhstan & beyond.
Today, Kazakhstan’s snow leopard population is estimated at 152–189 individuals, with around 70% living in protected areas.

Where does the snow leopard travel?
With support from @theGEF, the UNDP, and the Government of Kazakhstan, equipped scientists with satellite telemetry, camera traps, and drones to track these elusive species.

A major milestone came in 2025, when Kazakhstan adopted its Concept for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biodiversity - the country’s first strategic document of this scale dedicated to nature.
Today, biodiversity conservation is no longer a collection of standalone projects, but part of a broader national policy agenda.

Can long-term environmental projects shape national policy?
Over the past 20 years, @theGEF-supported initiatives implemented w/UNDP have helped conserve Kazakhstan’s steppes, forests, deserts, mountains, and wetlands. Six major programmes laid the foundation for a more systematic approach to biodiversity conservation.

That’s why CHANGE works across Central Asia — supported by the @EUinKazakhstan and implemented by @UNDP , @UNFPA, and @UN_Women — to prevent violence, shift harmful norms, and expand opportunities.
These are the kinds of conversations we brought to #EuroFest2026 — where people shared ideas, challenged stereotypes, and reflected on what equality means in practice.

Bias doesn’t always show up as discrimination. More often, it sounds like “common sense”:
🔹 "men are better leaders"
🔹 "care work is for women"
🔹 "some jobs are for men"
Nearly 9 in 10 people worldwide still hold biases against women.
These everyday assumptions shape real outcomes — who gets supported, promoted, listened to.
They influence education, jobs, income, and safety… including whether violence is dismissed or challenged.
The declining water levels of the Caspian Sea are becoming a critical challenge for the region, threatening biodiversity, ecosystems and local livelihoods.
W/the support of Japan and UNDP, Kazakhstan is strengthening monitoring, water governance, data sharing and regional cooperation to support coordinated action for the future of the Caspian Sea.

Flood risks are increasing with climate change, making early warning systems more important than ever.
In Kazakhstan, water professionals joined a 🇯🇵 Japan-funded training on hydrological modeling to strengthen flood forecasting, reservoir operation and coordinated response.
Safe workplaces require more than policies — they require awareness, trust & action. In Kazakhstan, 200+ representatives from government agencies, national companies, civil society & UN joined a UNDP training on preventing sexual exploitation, abuse & harassment
