Arrivals of Sudanese refugees in neighbouring Chad have accelerated sharply in the past week.

Since the start of the brutal conflict in Sudan in April 2023, almost one million refugees have crossed into Chad.

Sudanese refugees continue to cross into Chad every single day, four years after the start of the conflict in Sudan.

The Regional Refugee Coordinator of the Sudan Situation, @mamadou_dbalde was on BBC Focus on Africa after visiting eastern Chad.

In eastern Chad, Sudan Situation Refugee Coordinator @mamadou_dbalde heard the harrowing stories of Sudanese refugee families.

“The rapes, the violence against individuals … It is unspeakable. It is unforgivable to have human beings going through so much violence.”

Balde continues to advocate for peace in Sudan and for the international community to support countries hosting refugees.

Clean water means healthier children, greater dignity, and safer daily lives for families forced to flee their homes.

With the support of @KuwaitFund, UNHCR and partners have built a new water distribution system in Goudrane refugee settlement, eastern Chad, bringing safe drinking water to 30,000 refugee and host community beneficiaries and helping reduce the risk of waterborne diseases.

Because access to safe water is more than a basic need. It is a lifeline.

3.8 million people are forcibly displaced across the Central Sahel.

Following a visit to Mali and Burkina Faso, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Barham Salih called for greater investment in protection, education, livelihoods and solutions for refugees and the communities hosting them.

From Adré on the Chad-Sudan border, the Refugee Coordinator for the Sudan Situation, @mamadou_dbalde, says sustained support is needed for refugees fleeing the conflict and the Chadian communities welcoming them.

A year and a half after my last visit to Adré, families are still arriving from #Darfur, #Sudan, seeking safety in #Chad.

Chadian communities continue to welcome them with generosity.

They need our solidarity and sustained support to keep helping those forced to flee.

Over the past week, Adré and Tiné each received an average of 200 Sudanese refugees a day - that’s around 400 daily in these two border towns alone.

Families need safety now and lasting peace in Sudan.
