I condemn the recent killing of a Serbian @UNIFIL_ peacekeeper in Lebanon.
Seven peacekeepers serving with UNIFIL have now been killed & several more have been wounded since the escalation in hostilities since March this year.
These attacks must stop.
Ukrainian peacekeeper Sergii Prykhodko and Uruguayan peacekeeper Sergeant Matias Reyes are honoured with the Captain Mbaye Diagne Medal for Exceptional Courage during the International Day of UN Peacekeepers commemorations.
Austria, Kyrgyzstan, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, and Zimbabwe were elected by the General Assembly to non-permanent seats at the Security Council for 2027-2028
Congratulations to 🇦🇹🇰🇬🇵🇹🇹🇹🇿�� on their election as members of the Security Council for a two-year term starting on 1 January 2027. Member States have chosen who will take seats at the horseshoe table in the Security Council and carry responsibility for maintaining international peace and security and upholding the UN Charter and international law at a time of growing pressure on the international rules-based order.

I condemn today’s military escalation in the Middle East. The use of force by the United States & Israel against Iran, and the subsequent retaliation by Iran across the region, undermine international peace & security.
All Member States must respect their obligations under international law, including the Charter of the @UN. The Charter clearly prohibits “the threat of the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the Purposes of the United Nations.”
I call for an immediate cessation of hostilities & de-escalation. Failing to do so risks a wider regional conflict with grave consequences for civilians & regional stability. I strongly encourage all parties to return immediately to the negotiating table.
I reiterate that there is no viable alternative to the peaceful settlement of international disputes, in full accordance with international law, including the UN Charter. The Charter provides the foundation for the maintenance of international peace and security.

I'm deeply concerned about the possible intensification of instability in Venezuela, the potential impact on the region & the precedent it may set for how relations between & among states are conducted.
The situation is critical, but it's still possible to prevent a wider & more destructive conflagration.
I call on all Venezuelan actors to engage in an inclusive, democratic dialogue in which all sectors of society can determine their future, with full respect of human rights, the rule of law & the sovereign will of the Venezuelan people.
