Hate in the World’s Borough: How the Far-Right Has Flourished in Queens, New York
After Donald Trump’s presidential victory in 2016, hate crimes incidents rose dramatically across the country, including in Trump’s birthplace of Queens, New York. Once an enclave for whites fleeing Manhattan, after decades of immigration, Queens is now one of the most diverse places on Earth (its slogan: “The World’s Borough”). Despite facing housing discrimination and political and economic exclusion, its non-white population has flourished.
But this diversification has fueled generations of white resentment across the still deeply segregated borough. Queens has seen a range of far-right groups and individuals, from the Ku Klux Klan to neo-Nazis to ultra-nationalist organizations (including from immigrants’ countries of origin).

“I’m not a racist,” said Joel Tenney, a pastor from Iowa who follows far-right provocateur 'Jake' Lang across the U.S.

“The CRU was created after us sitting at the table with Amy [Klobuchar],” said Ianna Burrell, the sister of Myon Burrell who was incarcerated when he was just 15 and spent 18 years in prison after being wrongfully convicted for murder before getting his sentence commuted and released in December 2020. “He still has not went in front of the CRU,” Ianna said. Burrell’s CRU application to get the wrongful conviction off his record was not completed before the Conviction Review Unit was closed.
NEW: Minnesota Ends Conviction Review Unit With 160 Cases Still Under Investigation
Minnesota’s Attorney General Keith Ellison has decided to “eliminate” the state’s Conviction Review Unit (CRU) less than six years after he created it. The closure is a devastating blow to around 160 CRU applicants in Minnesota prisons whose cases were pending final investigation into their claims of wrongful conviction.
Designed to “identify, remedy, and prevent wrongful convictions,” the CRU was ultimately stunted by limited funds and officially completed just four investigations after receiving over 1,150 applications. Ellison said he closed the unit “due to budgetary constraints.”
“How can this be a funding problem,” asked Marvina Haynes, who successfully fought to free her innocent brother Marvin from prison after 20 years.
Haynes led a press conference among family of the incarcerated, advocates, and activists at the Minnesota State Capitol on July 14, 2026, calling for the state to fund the unit. “We are here today to demand that legislators move forward, fund the [Conviction Review Unit].”

“We’re not staying silent. We’re not backing down. No to the camp.” The slogan, painted in red and black across a large banner, hangs from the gate of a factory across from the Skouloudis facility. A few yards away, a second banner reads: “No camp — the people have a voice.”
NEW: Villagers in Crete are fighting the government’s plan to convert a disused factory into a reception center for people on the move, escalating a monthslong standoff that pits xenophobic backlash against an increasingly securitized EU border regime.

The main temporary holding site in Heraklion remains the former psygeio — a Coast Guard cold-storage building in the port area. Meant to hold just 70 to 80 people, the site held more than 450 in the first months of 2026, forcing men, women and children to sleep on the floor.
