Prof @LenkaBula highlighted that in 2019, Unisa honoured the legacy of Simiso Nkwanyana by naming its Durban Regional Hub after him, describing it as a permanent monument to his enduring contribution to the institution and society.

4th #SimisoNkwanyanaMemorialLecture is convened annually by Unisa Principal and Vice-Chancellor Prof Puleng LenkaBula to honours the legacy of Simiso Nkwanyana. Mr Nkwanyana was a respected student leader and founding member of the first Unisa Students' Representative Council (SRC), established in 1996. Nkwanyana was widely recognised for his principled leadership and strong support base in the KwaZulu-Natal Region and went on to serve as KwaZulu-Natal Secretary of the South African Communist Party (SACP) at the time of his untimely passing in 2003, at the age of 31. In recognition of his contribution to student leadership and social justice, Unisa named its Durban Regional Hub building after him in 2019.
