The Committee of Five—John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Robert Livingston, and Roger Sherman—was appointed to draft the Declaration of Independence 250 years ago today.
Jefferson's draft of the document is here at the Library, and will be featured in a new exhibition opening July 3.
Maryland Historical Trust recognized Carroll County for commitment to preservation of the Union Mills historic site at an award ceremony May 1, at the kick-off of the site's annual Flower & Plant Market. The County recently concluded a quality waterwheel restoration at the mill.

65 Years ago, Sargent Shriver became the first director of the Peace Corps. The Shriver family from Union Mills has been contributing to our Nation's continuing revolution for all of its 250 years!
On 3/22/61, Sargent Shriver took the helm as 1st director of the Peace Corps. Descended from Union Mills founder Andrew Shriver, Sargent spent much of his youth at Union Mills and attributed his sense of service and values to his family roots here.

Sad preservation news: Sykesville seeks to demolish the former B.F. Shriver Co. cannery in Sykesville’s South Branch Park. The brick structure was built in 1917 and operated as a Shriver cannery until 1944, one of 6 plants operated by the canning business founded at Union Mills.
This All Souls Day, we remember Hilda Shriver, born November 2, 1882 at Union Mills, MD. Among the 4th generation of Shrivers at Union Mills, she became the mother of an Ambassador, mother-in-law to a Kennedy, and was a well-loved and widely known Catholic and political activist.
