@MarkusOwenMMB@RSocPublishing Many thanks to @LeverhulmeTrust and @UniofNottingham for supporting the Modelling and Analytics for a Sustainable Society (MASS) PhD programme leading to 11 new Drs so far (3 more to come) and this and many other great outcomes!
Delighted that this by former @UoN_MASS PhD student Tim Whiteley is out and #OpenAccess in @RSocPublishing#Interface

Happy to officially announce our 2nd of 3 @UoN_MASS
Doctoral Prize Winners for 2020/21, Hayley Mills! Congratulations @haylsmills 🎉👏
Hayley tells us about what motivated her to apply for this prize and the work that she will be doing in this project 😀
It is nearly time for postdoc appreciation week!👏 Follow @UK_NPAW for more info and don't forget to register for their big events taking place next Monday and Tuesday! #NPAW2020

PhD student @haylsmills models the changes in calcium patterns in plant root cells to understand how some plants gain nutrients naturally from nitrogen-fixing bacteria.🌱
Can you estimate the amount of nitrogen fertilizer used in agriculture in 2017? (worldwide🌍)
Using maths to grow food 🌱

With the world population growing by around 80,000,000 people per year 🌍, we are facing the challenge to ensure worldwide food security whilst dealing with increasingly degraded soils… https://t.co/oVL3g58Lg2

Instead of this weeks #UoNMathsSpotlight video, we would like to shine a light on our PhD students and staff who continue to inspire and engage others in maths, even during lockdown!👏

It is #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek !
It is so incredibly important to look after your mental well-being!
We will be posting a tip a day this week- these are things that have helped some of our researchers and we are hoping that, by sharing them, they may help others too!
PhD @UoNMASS student @HCollis_Maths uses math models to mimic the movement of auxin in plant roots. This is important when considering how environmental changes affect the growth of vital agricultural crops like rice. How much rice do you think is consumed worldwide each year?🤔
Many congratulations to Tim Whiteley on passing his PhD on modelling urban systems @UoN_MASS also with @UoNFutureFood. A really nice mix of modelling and spatial data, with some cool simulations and maps. Watch this space for preprints!
Happy Women in Mathematics Day! 🎉👏
As said by NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson: "Girls are capable of doing everything men are capable of doing"
Who are #WomeninMaths that inspire you? Comment below so that we can all celebrate their achievements😀

We are really looking forward to our online seminar tomorrow discussing biohazards in our rivers with Professor Elizabeth Wellington of @warwickmaths 😃 We will also hear from our own Dr. Edward Acheampong and Tim Whiteley who will be sharing their experiences of thesis writing!
PhD @UoN_MASS student Lorna Burnell works with hydrological models that can be used to make projections about water runoff across the land. These models help to determine future patterns of flooding or drought. Which do you think caused more deaths globally between 1970-2012?🤔
There is a virtual maths PGR mental health meet up on Teams today at 5pm. Always remember to look after yourself and keep talking to people - it is likely others are struggling with the same things! #MentalHealthAwareness#MentalHealthMatters
Here is a new paper from PhD student @MLE_Mitchell, her supervisor @GillesStupfler and collaborators, which looks at using extreme value theory to estimate maximum yields of winter wheat. This is of high importance when addressing global food security! Well done to all involved😀
