When digital models are used to simulate patients or machines one by one, the cost of running large virtual trials quickly becomes impractical.
To address this scalability challenge, researchers proposed and evaluated a digital twin cohort framework built on interconnected rather than isolated models. They introduced cohort-level learning strategies that transfer information across members, relying on shared latent representations or learned discrepancies between models. In two cardiac digital twin case studies, this approach reduced computational burden by more than 50% while also improving emulator accuracy, even for relatively small cohorts.
A more cost-efficient way to link digital twins could allow patients to benefit from virtual testing of multiple care options that would otherwise be too costly to run in comprehensive trials today.
