IN PHOTOS: Behavioral addictions, including mobile gambling and excessive social media use are emerging as significant and growing public health concerns.

“Addiction is not only about substances. Perhaps one of the most important responsibilities of this Academy is to broaden the way we understand addiction. Behavioral and process addictions are increasingly recognized as significant health problems,” Philippine Academy of Addiction and Recovery Medicine, Inc. (PAARM) President Dr. Joselito C. Pascual said during the group’s inaugural annual convention held at Rosh Hotel, Malate, Manila.

The behavioral or process addictions prevalent in the country and recognized as significant health problems are gambling, problematic digital and media use, compulsive eating, hypersexual behavior, and other repetitive behaviors characterized by impaired control, continued engagement despite harm, and significant disruption of functioning.

“In the Philippines, gambling has long been part of our social and cultural landscape, but accessibility has changed dramatically. What once required physical presence can now occur through a mobile phone—24 hours a day, seven days a week, in the privacy of one’s bedroom,” Dr. Pascual warned.

IN PHOTOS: The University of the Philippines Manila College of Medicine has opened its Surgical Knowledge Intensive Learning Laboratory thru Simulation (SKILLS), a state-of-the-art facility designed to address the growing demand for cadaver-based simulation training across medical specialties and strengthen the preparation of health professionals before they perform procedures on actual patients.

Unlike the conventional anatomy laboratory, which primarily uses cadavers to teach human anatomy and dissection, SKILLS uses cadaver-based simulation to allow trainees to practice clinical and surgical procedures in a controlled environment before performing them on patients.

IN PHOTOS: The University of the Philippines Manila brought Philippine experiences and research in maternal and child health to the global stage as co-organizer of the 15th International Conference on the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Handbook, held in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Carrying the theme “From Fulfilling Rights to Building Resilience,” the conference gathered policymakers, health professionals, researchers, development partners, and advocates to exchange experiences on how the MCH Handbook can protect the health and rights of mothers and children while strengthening families, communities, and health systems.

Prof. Maria Eliza Aguila formally took her oath as the newly appointed Director of the Technology Transfer and Business Development Office (TTBDO) during the Chancellor’s Management Team Meeting.

She took her oath before UP Manila Chancellor Michael Tee, Vice Chancellor for Research and Extension Leslie Michelle Dalmacio, and members of the Chancellor’s Management Team.

As the new TTBDO director, Prof. Aguila will lead the office in advancing intellectual property protection, technology transfer, utilization, and partnerships, supporting the development and scaling of the University of the Philippines (UP) Manila research and innovations for wider use and impact.

Prof. Aguila succeeds Prof. Lourdes Marie Tejero, who served as TTBDO Director for seven years. Under Tejero’s leadership, the office advanced UP Manila’s intellectual property and technology transfer work, including the filing of its first international patents involving technologies from the UP SIBOL COVID-19 projects. The University also recorded numerous granted patents, registered utility models, trademarks, and copyrights during her tenure. UP Manila’s intellectual property earned national recognition through the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) Innovation and Technology Support Offices (ITSO) 2.0 Program. The University received the Double Palladium Award in 2024, becoming the only university among more than 100 ITSO institutions nationwide to receive the distinction, and another Palladium Award in 2025. From 2020 to 2025, UP Manila earned consecutive Platinum Awards for intellectual property awareness, patent filings, and technology transfer. The University also received an Intellectual Property Citation during the Gawad Yamang Isip Awards.

IN PHOTOS: The University of the Philippines (UP) Manila College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) - Department of Behavioral Sciences spearheaded a consultative dialogue with Representative Roman Romulo, Chair of the House Committee on Basic Education and Culture.

During the productive engagement, the team was able to share vital institutional and behavioral research on violence prevention in schools, discuss practical ways to integrate mental health responses directly into basic education frameworks, and provide some suggestions to lawmakers in crafting effective, evidence-based legislation for safer learning spaces. The discussion was further enriched by Ferdinand Pol Martin, a PhD student major in Curriculum Studies at the UP Diliman College of Education.

ADVISORY

Pursuant to Memorandum Circular No. 135, the following work arrangement and learning delivery modes shall be observed today, September 10, 2026:

Classes – Classes shall shift to appropriate alternative learning modes. Faculty members are advised to exercise caution and prioritize the safety and well-being of students. Reasonable flexibility and leniency shall likewise be extended to students who may experience difficulties in attending classes, participating in learning activities, or complying with academic requirements due to heavy rains, flooding, or other related circumstances in their respective areas.

Work – Work in UP Manila shall shift to a work-from-home arrangement.  Heads of offices are enjoined to exercise discretion in the assignment of tasks, with due consideration for employees who may be adversely affected by the heavy rains and flooding.

The Philippine General Hospital (PGH) shall issue its own advisory on appropriate work arrangements.

IN PHOTOS: The University of the Philippines (UP) Manila and Capiz State University are working toward a partnership that would expand access to health professions education in Capiz and help address the province’s need for health workers.

Officials from both institutions met in a hybrid session, focusing on its academic structure, faculty requirements, student support, funding arrangements, admissions procedures, and regulatory requirements. The discussions covered a possible ladderized pathway from midwifery to nursing offered by the UP Manila School of Health Sciences.
