The Coast Guard has released its Board of Inquiry (BOI) report on the March 26, 2024, allision (collision with a fixed structure) of the Motor Vessel Dali with the Francis Scott Key Bridge — an incident that took six lives and shut down the Port of Baltimore for months.

Over the past year, the Board visited ports, analyzed vessel traffic patterns, reviewed how risk-assessment tools have been used historically, and gathered input from 41 Captain of the Port zones nationwide. That work produced 20 recommendations for strengthening how the Coast Guard identifies and manages risk across the ports, waterways, and shipping lanes that keep America's economy moving.

"The tragic Key Bridge incident underscores the urgent need to strengthen our approach to port safety and risk management," said Rear Adm. Wayne Arguin, chair of the Board of Inquiry. "The Board's findings and recommendations provide a roadmap to enhance the resilience of our ports and ensure the continued security of the Marine Transportation System."

The Marine Transportation System underpins the nation's economic and national security. The Coast Guard is accepting stakeholder input on the report's findings through Feb. 28, 2027. That input will inform the Commandant's Final Action Memorandum, expected for release in August 2027.

@USCGAcademy is renovating and preserving one of its most historic buildings. A $51M contract awarded on August 25 to Whiting-Turner Contracting will both restore and modernize Chase Hall’s Annex A, creating a more comfortable and accessible facility.

This contract is funded by Fiscal Year 2026 appropriations. Upcoming upgrades for the Academy include a new STEM academic building, an aquatics center, and further investment in safe, reliable, and resilient infrastructure that is critical for developing strong and ready Coast Guard leaders.

⚓ USCGC Ingham is on the way! ⚓ 

On August 27, @USCG reached a new milestone in its Offshore Patrol Cutter (OPC) program, when it marked the start of production of USCGC Ingham at Austal USA in Mobile, Alabama. USCGC Ingham is the third OPC in active production at Austal, along with USCGCs Pickering and Icarus. 

The Coast Guard is leveraging a historic $4.3 billion investment provided through the One Big Beautiful Bill Act to fund production of OPCs.
