Behind the scenes + why music videos are still important. I had a blast directing my first video. I had a multitude of reasons why I wanted to finally step into the director’s chair but I’d like to talk about one in particular.

As we continue to be conditioned to consume increasingly shorter form content, I think we have to make sure the music video stays alive and well. As far as I can remember, some of my favorite artists always provided a strong visual identity to their music (Missy Elliott, Busta Rhymes, Michael Jackson & the late Oliver Tree all come to mind for their eccentric videos). It always gave me deeper insight into the mind of the artist, something that’s not always apparent when you’re just listening to their latest single on headphones. In fact, sometimes it even made me like the song more just from the associations I made after seeing visuals. We have to continue to push forward longer form art – there’s so much more creativity you can express when you go beyond your typical 15 second internet clip.

If you’ve been following me, I’ve always tried to deliver music videos that pushed boundaries & I’ve gotten to work with some dope directors over the years. In recent times I realized I should’ve done more of this and missed linking music videos to my tracks. But I didn’t just want to get back into it, I wanted to challenge myself and make the leap into directing.
We shot this whole thing in about 12 hours near Palm Springs. I had absolutely zero budget, it was a hectic shoot and I’m not gonna lie … it was hot as hell.

But we powered through and I was hyped to load it up on my laptop and edit it once we wrapped.

I just directed my first music video ever. 🎬 After years of being heavily creatively involved with all my music videos, I finally decided it was time to fully jump into the director’s chair.  We shot this in just 12 hours in the desert without any real budget … then I spent a bunch of sleepless nights editing it all just in time for the release.

I want this to be living proof that if there’s a will to try something new, you CAN do it.  The barriers of access to learning a new skill have never been this removed so don’t ever let anyone box you in as a creative!  I also want to pull the curtain back and show all of you that I truly have always taken a wholistic approach to being an artist & there’s so many deeper layers to what I do when it comes to my craft.

HUGE thank you to the talented handful of people involved in the making of this (they’re credited in the video description).  Y’all truly helped create something vibrant for the summer & beyond.

We only got to meet each other once but our interaction just reinforced the thought that there should be more people like him in the world.

He was a genuinely funny & kind human being, did not take himself too seriously & pushed boundaries as an artist. I always found everything he did to be very inspiring through how unique his art was (especially his music videos). We need more people taking risks & unafraid to be different.

I forgot to post this video but our green rooms were next to each other at a festival in Arizona. Oliver decided to pretend that the glass was soundproof and we made a whole bit around it before we rode over & watched his set. Hopefully this clip brings a smile to you even though he’s gone.
