At a time when politics remains trapped in caste and identity narratives, the Govt of UP is attempting a more future-oriented approach centred around the common citizen. The following decisions taken by the cabinet on May 4 reflect the same:
1. The new farmer compensation policy for power transmission lines is a progressive step. Earlier, farmers suffered when big infrastructure projects passed through their land. Now, they will get 200% compensation for tower base areas and compensation even for the corridor area where land use is affected. This is how development should happen: by treating citizens as partners, not problems.
2. Another impactful reform announced is the DREAM Skill Labs initiative. Robotics, electronics, design and modern manufacturing are the industries of the future, but most govt school students never get exposure to them. Bringing these labs to govt schools with help from a Tata enterprise can reduce the gap between elite private schools and ordinary students. The focus is finally shifting from just giving degrees to creating skilled and employable youth.
3. The OTD CM Fellowship is another smart move. Indian governance needs fresh talent and better data-based decision-making. Bringing young professionals directly into district-level economic work and policymaking can make governance more modern, transparent and result-oriented.
This is what future-focused governance looks like: fair treatment for farmers, better opportunities for youth, and a more professional administration. Politics should be about preparing society for the future, not endlessly repeating old identity politics.
