This problem is only going to get worse as AI becomes more powerful and more widely used.
Congress needs to address AI and how it can be used to sway our elections. We should start with passing the NO FAKES Act.
AI deepfake videos make candidates appear to say things they never said. We’ve seen that in Kentucky, Texas and now in Vermont.
These outrageous lies are a direct threat to democracy.
Congress needs to act NOW.
This false video attack on Becca is a disturbing example of using AI to try and trick voters.
Mark Coester’s amplification of the video—and his attacks on the press—are unacceptable and disqualifying.
A political opponent recently posted a deepfake video of me on social media. It was generated using AI and fabricated my voice and image to put words in my mouth. While it represents a new - and dangerous - low, it was not unpredictable.
It just drives home why we need to act now to give people protections against unauthorized AI replicas of their name and likeness. Let’s start by passing my NO FAKES Act.
Vermont Republican State Senator Steven Heffernan stood on the Vermont Senate floor last week and compared transgender people to animals. Repeatedly. Even after being corrected on the law.
And he did it as a “warning” about what Proposal 4, Vermont's equal protection amendment, would bring.
Governor Phil Scott endorsed Senator Heffernan in 2024. Campaigned with him. Donated to him. This is who Governor Scott chose to put in power.
With this new initiative, we’re taking a major step toward:

Attorney General Clark has taken the Trump administration to court 48 times since January 2025. As long as this lawless federal administration keeps coming for Vermonters' rights, Attorney General Clark and Secretary of State Copeland Hanzas will be there to fight back.
Donald Trump signed an executive order targeting mail-in voting — a direct attack on free and fair elections and the latest in a series of escalating efforts to restrict voting access ahead of the 2026 midterms. Vermont is fighting back.
The Constitution does not allow the President to unilaterally change election procedures. Vermont has safe and secure elections. The lawsuit alleges that the President’s executive order violates the separation of powers and unlawfully interferes with states’ mail voting programs.
We mourn this profound loss and extend our deepest condolences to Terje’s family, friends, and loved ones. His legacy will endure in the progress he helped achieve and in all those who carry his work forward.
His impact reached far beyond our Party, from his leadership in HIV/AIDS advocacy to decades of service uplifting LGBTQ+ Vermonters and organizing for lasting change across the country.
