Good news for Andy Burnham: near universal public support exists for ending throwaway living. And his soon-to-be government will inherit a plan to tackle it.

83% of Brits think throwaway culture is a big problem. Among Labour voters, that increases to 86%, with consensus holding among those tempted by other parties.

The circular economy would tackle it. Action was promised in the 2024 manifesto. A growth plan developed with independent experts. Still unpublished.

Rhododendron ponticum might look beautiful, but it’s causing real damage to the UK’s temperate rainforests.

This invasive species spreads fast, smothers native plants and lichens, and blocks the regeneration of our woodlands.

These rainforests cover just 1% of our land yet and are of global significance. We need action to restore and to protect these special environments.

Despite being harmful, it's still sold in garden centres much like other invasive species - something we're calling on Government to address by updating the list of Species of Special Concern and strengthening regulation.

The Farming Roadmap announced today is a welcome opportunity to reset the direction of agricultural policy.

Farmers must be supported through the transition to more nature-friendly practices while maintaining viable, profitable businesses.

We should be rewarding measurable outcomes: healthier soils that store carbon, increased tree cover for water retention and cooling, and reduced reliance on chemicals.

A stronger focus on long-term incentives for nature recovery and a rising regulatory baseline is positive for rivers, soils, and sustainability. But the real test will be implementation.

Government must now deliver.

The Government’s commitment to reduce UK greenhouse gas emissions by 87% by 2038–42 is an important step towards a safer future.

Coming as England experiences yet another major heatwave, it is also a timely reminder that climate change is not a distant challenge - it is already being felt by communities and wildlife across the country.

Nature is one of our most effective allies in tackling climate change. Restoring peatlands, woodlands, rivers and wetlands can lock up carbon, reduce flooding, improve water quality and help communities cope with extreme heat.

Recovering nature is essential for wildlife too. Healthy habitats provide homes for the species that are under increasing pressure from climate change, habitat loss and environmental degradation.

As temperatures are forecast to reach up to 38°C this week, the case for investing in nature has never been clearer. Nature-based solutions can help people and wildlife adapt to a changing climate while delivering billions in economic benefits.

The Seventh Carbon Budget, where MPs vote on carbon targets, makes clear that action on climate and nature must go hand in hand. With MPs set to vote on The Seventh Carbon Budget today, the Government must pull the nature lever harder by investing in nature recovery, supporting nature-friendly farming, mobilising green finance and giving climate resilience and adaptation the urgency it deserves.

From 22–28 June we're highlighting the growing threat of invasive non-native species and why prevention is better than expensive, long-term control.

The UK's list of regulated invasive species has stalled since Brexit, while the EU list has grown to 114 species.

The 2025 GB horizon scanning exercise identified 145 species of concern, yet only 1 of the top 20 highest-risk species is currently regulated.

We need:
✅ Faster species listings
✅ Stronger border controls
✅ Restrictions on sale & movement
✅ Faster action on emerging threats
